The Cable TV Engineer II (Network/Telecom Analyst II) position is a critical role within the Fairfax County government, specifically within the Cable & Consumer Services department. This position is responsible for performing technical operations across various platforms, including field, remote, studio, digital editing, and playback facilities, ensuring the effective distribution of content via the government cable channel, training network, and video streaming services. The engineer will work under general direction, carrying out project management assignments while collaborating closely with the senior engineer and the Communications Productions Division director. In this role, the engineer will provide essential engineering support for a variety of county and division projects, which encompass live cablecasts, video streaming, remote production, and the implementation of new technology systems. The engineer will oversee special engineering project assignments from inception to installation, which includes managing project costs, financial oversight, and materials management for the division. Additionally, the engineer will be responsible for the installation of new equipment and the reconfiguration of existing systems to optimize performance, while also preparing schematics and documentation for all engineering changes. Maintaining the technical quality of all county video, audio, and data operations on cable channels and other distribution systems is a key responsibility. The engineer will ensure the maintenance of video and audio equipment across various facilities, assist in the planning and design of cable and digital media equipment systems, and perform necessary procedures for daily playback of programming across all distribution channels. This includes automation playback, streaming, captioning, and file encoding, as well as ensuring the ongoing operation of distribution and transmission channels, including the county emergency message system. The engineer will also coordinate and provide technical support for field, studio, and remote production, live transmissions, and file conversion. They will evaluate systems problems, perform diagnostics, and recommend or implement solutions, while also coordinating activities with planners, engineers, vendors, and agency management. This position requires a proactive approach to project management, ensuring that all activities are completed within time frames and budget estimates, while also planning and implementing system security measures.
