About the position

The CAD Designer (Solidworks) at A. O. Smith is a key role within the Customer Product Engineering Team, responsible for customizing products into turnkey solutions for customers. This position involves collaboration with engineers, prototype development, and interaction with manufacturing processes, including programming plasma cutting equipment.

Responsibilities

  • Coordinate with project engineers on new product layout utilizing good verbal and organizational skills with minimal supervision.
  • Assist in build up of prototypes during pre-pilot stage of project, making necessary corrections to design.
  • Support manufacturing during initial production runs.
  • Create full assemblies for fit up and alignment of parts.
  • Check models, drawings, Product Change Processes and BOM's for clarity, completeness, conformity to standards, procedures, specifications and accuracy of calculations, dimensions and tolerancing.
  • Generate 3D solid models of parts and assemblies to ensure proper fit, form, and function.
  • Perform interference and tolerance stack up analysis.
  • Process Product Change Processes utilizing PLM system in an accurate and timely manner.
  • Ensure item and bill of material attributes are accurate and maintained in PLM system.
  • Understand policies and procedures within the department for assigning part numbers, redlining bills of material, revising drawings and working Product Change Processes while utilizing the company PLM system.
  • Recommend menu and tool bar changes to Cad Department Supervisor for all design software to facilitate productivity.
  • Understand and demonstrate company safety policies and procedures.

Requirements

  • Associate's degree in related field required; Bachelor's degree a plus.
  • 3+ years of combined work experience or education/training.
  • Good understanding of data management or PLM is preferred.
  • Good working knowledge of the Windows platform and basic windows commands.
  • Ability to read, analyze, and interpret documents such as Engineering Change Requests, Red lines, ANSI standards, and corporate rules and regulations.
  • Ability to apply basic mathematical concepts such as trigonometry, geometry, algebra, and basic equations.
  • Ability to read measuring instruments to calculate overall dimensions fit and build-up.
  • Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience with plasma cutting equipment.
  • Familiarity with product lifecycle management (PLM) systems.
