About the position

The Cafeteria Assistant position at Wayne County Public Schools is a vital role within the Child Nutrition department, specifically located at Tommy's Road Elementary. The primary goal of this position is to assist in the preparation, sale, and service of food for the school’s food service program. The Cafeteria Assistant will be responsible for following all rules, policies, and procedures, as well as adhering to state and federal regulations relevant to the child nutrition department. This role is essential in ensuring that students receive nutritious meals in a safe and clean environment. In this position, the assistant will engage in various tasks including the preparation of food, cleaning and washing dishes and equipment, and collecting money and ID cards during meal service. The assistant will also be responsible for making reports of lunches and collections, tabulating the counts of paid, free, and reduced-price meals. Participation in training programs is expected to enhance skills and knowledge related to food service. Maintaining a neat and clean area is crucial, and the assistant will perform related duties as requested by the Director or supervisor. The position is classified as a ten-month work year and is considered at-will employment. The Cafeteria Assistant will be evaluated based on performance in accordance with the provisions of the Board and local policy on personnel evaluation. The starting salary for this position is $15.00 per hour, reflecting the competitive nature of the compensation offered by Wayne County Public Schools.

Responsibilities

  • Follow all rules, policies, and procedures relevant to the child nutrition department.
  • Assist in the preparation of food.
  • Clean and wash dishes and equipment.
  • Collect money and ID cards during meal service.
  • Make reports of lunches and collections, and tabulate paid, free, and reduced-price meal counts.
  • Participate in training programs.
  • Keep the area neat and clean.
  • Perform related duties and responsibilities as requested by the Director or supervisor.

Requirements

  • High School degree or equivalent.
  • Demonstrate functional knowledge of basic principles of food cookery.
  • Demonstrate functional knowledge of food service equipment.
  • Ability to be mentally alert and apply knowledge applicable to the position.
  • Ability to follow written recipes and instructions.
  • Ability to operate dishwasher, food grinder, mixer, meat slicer, range, ovens, refrigerator, and freezer.
  • Ability to operate a computer and calculator accurately and make change rapidly.
  • Physical ability to exert up to 25 pounds of force occasionally and dexterity to perform the duties and responsibilities.
