About the position

The Hardware Test Engineering team at Apple plays a crucial role in maintaining quality standards across the company's product lines. As a System Design Engineer, you will be responsible for the design and deployment of systems that perform calibration and performance validation of optical sensors. This position encompasses the entire lifecycle of the test system, from initial prototyping to deployment in mass production environments. You will collaborate closely with the Optical and Health Sensing design group to define calibration and testing procedures, and design high-precision instrumentation and systems to efficiently execute these tasks in a factory setting. In this role, you will specify, design, validate, and deploy automated equipment for testing and calibrating devices as part of Apple's new product introduction (NPI) and mass production processes. Your responsibilities will be tailored to your technical background, but may include architecting hardware systems for testing and calibrating optical and health sensors, modeling and simulating instrumentation errors, and developing and debugging test software using C/C++/Objective-C. You will also analyze large datasets from sensors, perform root cause analysis for failures, and optimize existing algorithms for better performance. You will lead cross-functional teams and mentor junior engineers, working collaboratively with a diverse group of expert engineers from various disciplines, including Systems Hardware, Product Design, Reliability, Software, and Operations. This position requires a strong ability to balance engineering requirements with manufacturing efficiency while ensuring high product quality.

Responsibilities

  • Architect hardware for systems to test and calibrate optical and health sensors.
  • Model, simulate and experimentally verify sources of instrumentation error, and determine measurement uncertainty as it relates to the overall needs for the product.
  • Develop, optimize, and debug test software in C/C++/Objective-C.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to specify and implement test coverage.
  • Analyze large amounts of sensor data and use data-driven approaches to tackle engineering challenges.
  • Perform failure mode root cause analysis and resolution, debugging from the system level down to the component level.
  • Redefine existing algorithms to optimize them for performance or execution time.
  • Balance decisions between engineering asks and manufacturing efficiency while ensuring product quality.
  • Lead cross-functional teams and mentor junior engineers on the team.
  • Work collaboratively with a creative and diverse team of expert engineers from all disciplines.

Requirements

  • 3+ years of professional experience with at least 1 year in the relevant sensing industry with a focus on sensor/system integration.
  • Experience in working with non-imaging optics like proximity sensors, ambient light sensors, lasers.
  • Knowledge of electrical engineering fundamentals, and experience with light measurement (Photometry, Spectroradiometers) and thermal or electrical health sensing measurements.
  • Academic or professional background in Biomedical Engineering or Medical Sciences, and expertise with sensors and transducers used in medical applications.
  • Familiarity with handheld/wearable products and understanding of the design tradeoffs needed to make such products successful.
  • Experience with validation & characterization techniques used for medical sensors.
  • Familiarity with programming in one or more of the following: C/C++/Objective-C and scripting languages like Python/Lua.
  • Experience in one or more source control systems like Git/SVN.
  • Experience with processing data using tools like MATLAB, JMP or Python.
  • High volume consumer electronics calibration, testing and manufacturing experience preferred.
  • Past technical leadership experience preferred.
  • Ability to work well in a collaborative, highly cross-functional and fast-paced environment.
  • Experience/curiosity about systems engineering in a multidisciplinary environment.
  • Strong English written and verbal communication skills.
