About the position

The Caltrans Highway Maintenance Worker is responsible for performing various labor tasks and operating light equipment to maintain state highways and facilities under the supervision of a Maintenance Supervisor. This role includes duties related to highway maintenance, snow removal, and may involve working in different units as needed. The position is seasonal and requires flexibility in working hours, including nights, weekends, and holidays, especially during the snow season.

Responsibilities

• Operate light maintenance and construction equipment requiring a Class C California Driver's License.
• Remove litter and dead animals from highways.
• Install lane closures and other traffic controls.
• Flag traffic and clean and repair drains.
• Repair and replace signs and other traffic safety devices.
• Remove brush and trees, and clean and service equipment.
• Load and unload materials from trucks and clean maintenance facilities.
• Hand patch, remove weeds both manually and mechanically, and perform other maintenance work as required.
• Assist in snow removal, including chain control and truck screen duties.
• Direct traffic and place warning and detour signs during road closures.
• Repair and build tire chains and operate snow removal equipment.

Requirements

• Valid California Class C Driver's License.
• Ability to pass a drug test and physical examination.
• Eligibility for hire based on score from the Caltrans Highway Maintenance Worker exam.

Nice-to-haves
