About the position

The Apple Camera Architecture team is seeking a highly motivated Camera System Engineer to lead the development of future camera hardware requirements for Apple Vision Pro products. This role is pivotal in fostering collaboration across various cross-functional teams to ensure the delivery of exceptional camera performance and features. The engineer will work closely with hardware, algorithm, and image signal processing (ISP) teams to integrate optimized camera hardware solutions with advanced software, ultimately providing market-leading imaging experiences. The ideal candidate will engage in detailed system analysis and trade-off evaluations, deriving camera and camera system requirements from specific use cases. This position requires the ability to push the boundaries of technology to achieve optimal optical solutions. Responsibilities include developing camera design options based on system requirements, leading architecture development, and conducting trade-off analyses across functions. The engineer will also define and perform simulations to quantify the performance of various camera design proposals and design studies to assess customer impact, including visual perception and computer vision algorithm impacts. Additionally, the role involves deriving image space figures of merit and requirements, allocating these requirements to related sub-components while considering calibration, hardware tolerances, variations, and reliability. Collaboration on factory test and metrology setups is essential, as is supporting the camera and system design validation process, including failure analysis and triage. A solid understanding of optical fundamentals, including camera photometry and pinhole modeling techniques, is crucial for success in this role.

Responsibilities

  • Develop camera design options based on system requirements and constraints.
  • Lead architecture development and trade-off analysis cross-functionally, providing technical leadership and oversight.
  • Define and perform simulation and analysis to quantify performance of various camera design proposals.
  • Design studies to quantitatively assess customer impact, including visual perception impact and/or computer vision algorithm impacts.
  • Derive image space figures of merit and requirements, allocating requirements to related sub-components, accounting for calibration, hardware tolerances, variations, and reliability.
  • Collaborate on factory test and metrology setups.
  • Support camera and system design and validation process, including failure analysis and triage.

Requirements

  • BS degree in a relevant field and relevant industry experience.
  • Experience using image quality metrics and image quality evaluation to assess camera performance.
  • Experience with basic image processing pipeline, including HDR, image fusion, and multi-camera registration.

Nice-to-haves

  • BS degree and a minimum of 3 years relevant industry experience.
  • Expertise in camera technologies and optical science, with strong knowledge in geometric and diffractive optics fundamentals, traditional image quality metrics, validation and metrology techniques for imaging, image sensor and pixel fundamentals, camera construction and assembly, and computer vision and machine learning fundamentals.
  • Working knowledge of imaging system simulations and evaluation of simulation results.
  • Familiarity with camera module design, including aspects of image sensor, optics, module construction, and assembly processes.
  • Technical project and team leadership experience with strong communication, persuasion, and negotiation skills.
  • Excellent written skills for clear reporting of data analysis and conclusions.
  • Action-oriented and problem solver.
