About the position

The Campus Police Captain for Patrol Operations at Georgia Gwinnett College is responsible for the management, supervision, training, and evaluation of both sworn and non-sworn staff within the Public Safety Police Division. This role involves ensuring compliance with federal, state, and local laws while overseeing the operational duties of the department, including budget preparation, staff assignments, and emergency management. The Captain plays a crucial role in maintaining campus safety and security, responding to emergencies, and developing standard operating procedures.

Responsibilities

  • Provides administrative and operational management of sworn and non-sworn staff in Public Safety Police Services.
  • Directs the supervision and performance evaluation of assigned employees, initiating recognition and disciplinary actions as necessary.
  • Coordinates employee development and management practices, including hiring and training.
  • Exercises discretion and independent judgment in performing police duties in compliance with laws and regulations.
  • Prepares required correspondence and reports, maintaining accurate records of activities.
  • Responds to emergencies and disasters, performing Incident Command responsibilities and coordinating responses.
  • Conducts internal and background investigations, analyzing problems and making recommendations.
  • Participates in the development and administration of the agency budget, overseeing public safety improvements and equipment maintenance.
  • Assumes command of the department in the absence of the Chief of Police and Deputy Chief of Police.
  • Promotes the department's core values and interacts with various stakeholders to ensure effective public safety.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree in a relevant field.
  • Eight years of experience as a GAPOST certified peace officer in good standing.
  • Four years of experience in middle or upper-level police management.
  • Recent employment within the last 12 months by a GAPOST recognized law enforcement agency.
  • Pass pre-employment testing, including background checks and drug tests.
  • Possess and maintain a valid Georgia Driver's license.

Nice-to-haves

  • Six years of college campus policing experience.
  • Master's degree in criminal justice or related fields.
  • Georgia POST peace officer training certificates in various specialized areas.
