About the position

The Campus Security Officer at South Puget Sound Community College (SPSCC) is responsible for ensuring a safe and secure environment across two college campuses and two satellite locations. This part-time role focuses on protecting life and property, maintaining order, and providing assistance to the college community, which includes students, faculty, and staff. The officer will engage in public safety, crime prevention, and emergency response to support student success and retention.

Responsibilities

  • Follow written and oral instructions; respond to emergencies and employ effective courses of action which includes summoning first responders.
  • Patrol campus buildings and property in security vehicle and on foot to enforce college policy, rules, regulations and applicable local, state, and federal statutes.
  • Observe and detect suspicious situations; protect life and property.
  • Inspect college buildings and grounds for prowlers, suspicious activity, fire, property damage, safety hazards, and security of doors, windows, buildings and vehicles.
  • Operate security equipment including portable, mobile, and base radios, security vehicles, computers, and telephones, expandable baton, handcuffs, OC (pepper) spray, flashlights, physical and electronic keys and key cars.
  • Issue timely warnings and emergency alert messages by telephone and computer.

Requirements

  • High School diploma or equivalent
  • Possession of a valid driver's license
  • Two years of work experience as a campus police or security officer or equivalent education
  • No previous felony convictions; and satisfactory completion of a background check.

Nice-to-haves

  • Knowledge of due process, use of force, WAC, RCW, FERP A and CLERY and security department standing operating procedures
  • Knowledge of keying systems, access control, and building security systems
  • Knowledge of computers and software applications, specifically MS Office suite: Word, Outlook, Excel, PowerPoint, and Access.
  • Knowledge of general safety precautions and fire hazards; fire alarm panel operation; first aid; report preparation and writing; law enforcement basics including use of force law; defensive tactics; officer safety, traffic control, interviewing, investigation procedures, evidence protection and preservation.
