About the position

The Payroll Specialist is responsible for processing, coordinating, and reviewing Canadian payroll at Simpson Strong-Tie. This role collaborates closely with Human Resources to ensure accurate payroll deductions and compliance with Canadian payroll laws. The position also offers opportunities to support the finance team and engage in projects beyond payroll responsibilities.

Responsibilities

  • Process Canadian payroll accurately and timely using Workday for biweekly and semimonthly payrolls, ensuring compliance with company policies and Canadian multi-province payroll laws (35%)
  • Process new hires, status changes, terminations, third-party disability pay, and garnishments (20%)
  • Research and resolve payroll-related problems in collaboration with the Canada location (15%)
  • Work with managers to ensure employee hours are submitted accurately and approved on time every pay period (10%)
  • Monitor, retain, and secure proper payroll documentation, including preparation for audits (10%)
  • Assist with Workday testing and running reports (10%)

Requirements

  • Associate's degree or higher from an accredited college or university preferred
  • Payroll Compliance Certification (PCP) preferred
  • 4 years processing Canadian Payroll across multiple provinces
  • 2 years Canadian payroll accounting and tax experience
  • Strong working knowledge of Canadian Payroll Laws
  • Proficiency using Workday and/or similar payroll platforms
  • Proficient in MS Office with strong Excel skills
  • Ability to attend to details and pursue quality in tasks
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and respect privacy
  • Effective communication skills, both written and verbal
  • Ability to display initiative, effort, and commitment to completing assignments
  • Ability to build and sustain cooperative working relationships

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience with payroll compliance certification (PCP)
  • Experience in payroll accounting and tax for Canadian payroll
