About the position

The Canal Structure Operator is responsible for the operation and maintenance of canal locks, movable dams, and lift bridges, ensuring safe passage for vessels while interacting with canal users. This role involves mechanical, electrical, and hydraulic operations, as well as performing preventative maintenance and repairs on equipment within the canal system. The position is part of the New York Hiring for Emergency Limited Placement Statewide Program (NY HELPS), allowing for non-competitive appointments during the program's duration.

Responsibilities

  • Interact with canal users to provide information and respond to inquiries.
  • Collect tolls and manage the operation of canal locks, movable dams, and lift bridges.
  • Manipulate switches and levers on control panels to operate locks and gates.
  • Observe and log the passage of vessels through the lock chamber.
  • Perform regular preventative maintenance on motors, generators, and other equipment.
  • Assist in the removal and replacement of electrical motors and panel boards during winter months.
  • Perform miscellaneous maintenance work including painting and groundskeeping.

Requirements

  • Six months of experience in the operation and assembly/maintenance of mechanical, electrical, automotive or diesel machinery.
  • Six months of experience working on a canal, with 50% of duties at a canal lock or lift bridge.
  • A certificate of completion from a BOCES or post-high school program in relevant fields.
  • Six college semester credit hours in relevant technical fields.
  • A valid license to operate a motor vehicle in New York State.
