About the position

The Cancer Registrar II at Dana-Farber Cancer Institute plays a crucial role in the identification, registration, and abstraction of cancer patients. This position operates under the direct supervision of the DF/BCC Associate Director and is responsible for reviewing and analyzing hospital records and other medical reports to extract relevant cancer data. The registrar will determine and classify various demographics, primary site, histology, stage, and treatment for all cancer sites, ensuring compliance with the standards set by the Commission on Cancer of the American College of Surgeons, as well as state cancer registries in Massachusetts and New Hampshire. Additionally, the role involves performing annual patient follow-ups as necessary to maintain accurate and up-to-date records. The Cancer Registrar II is expected to work full-time, 40 hours a week, from Monday to Friday, with a standard schedule of 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM. The position is fully remote, allowing for flexibility while maintaining a focus on the critical task of data collection and reporting. Responsibilities

  • Identify, register, and abstract patients with cancer.
  • Review and analyze hospital records and medical reports for relevant cancer data.
  • Determine and classify demographics, primary site, histology, stage, and treatment on all cancer sites.
  • Perform annual patient follow-up as needed.
  • Abstract complex cases and all cancer sites as an intermediate to advanced abstractor.
  • Conduct casefinding as necessary and collect additional data elements for disease center databases.
  • Ensure compliance with CoC Cancer Registry related standards.
  • Participate in ad hoc projects as necessary.

Requirements

  • High school diploma required; Bachelor's degree optional.
  • Minimum of two years abstracting experience.
  • Knowledge of medical terminology; anatomy/physiology preferred.
  • Data entry/computer experience required.
  • Certified Tumor Registrar (ODS-certified).
  • Ability to abstract complex cancer sites.
  • Ability to analyze multiple medical documents to classify and code cancer data.
  • Skilled judgment to identify missing information and resolve conflicting information.
  • Good attention to detail.
  • Experience with various computer systems including Windows applications and networked systems for data collection and report production.
  • Prefer experience with Elekta Metriq software and EPIC.
  • Knowledge of ICD-O, AJCC Staging, SEER, and STORE standards preferred.
  • Ability to work well with physicians, clinicians, researchers, and administrative staff.

Nice-to-haves

  • College courses in anatomy/physiology or equivalent preferred.
  • Experience with Elekta Metriq software and EPIC.
