About the position

The Canoe Program Coordinator at the Natural History Society of Maryland is a part-time, seasonal role responsible for coordinating canoe excursions from April to October 2025. The coordinator will manage all aspects of the trips, including securing permits, organizing a leadership team, developing a trip schedule, and ensuring the safety and enjoyment of participants during the excursions.

Responsibilities

  • Secure permits for canoe trips during the winter months.
  • Develop a trip schedule using past trips and scouting new locales.
  • Organize transport of gear for each trip.
  • Communicate with registrants and greet them on arrival.
  • Lead canoe trips with input from volunteer naturalists.
  • Ensure the safety of guests during excursions.
  • Manage unexpected issues that arise during trips.
  • Oversee the correct loading and unloading of gear.
  • Manage transport to secure locations.

Requirements

  • Expert river canoeist with 2+ years of guiding experience.
  • Outgoing personality with the ability to interact with diverse groups.
  • Competent in Google Drive, Sheets, Instagram, and Facebook.
  • Comfortable learning to use Wild Apricot, the booking system.
  • Ability to manage a complicated schedule of trips.
  • Able to lift 80lb canoes with assistance.
  • Wilderness First Aid and CPR Certified (or willing to obtain certification prior to the season).
  • Pass a background test.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experienced naturalist.
  • Bachelor's degree in Environmental Studies, psychology, biology, or a related field.
  • Experience in educating others.
  • Social media marketing skills.
  • Comfortable driving a canoe trailer.
