About the position

The CANS System Support Specialist at the Department of Family and Protective Services (DFPS) is responsible for providing consultative services and technical assistance related to the CANS assessment and the Texas Child-Centered Care System. This role involves planning, developing, and implementing agency programs, conducting assessments, and collaborating with various stakeholders to ensure compliance with state and federal regulations. The specialist will work under general supervision, utilizing independent judgment to support program staff and the community.

Responsibilities

  • Perform complex consultative services and technical assistance work.
  • Plan, develop, and implement agency programs related to CANS assessments.
  • Schedule, coordinate, and conduct CANS assessment interviews in various locations.
  • Conduct comprehensive reviews of literature, statutes, and policies; prepare reports and studies.
  • Provide input and recommendations on policies and processes to the Texas Child-Centered Care implementation team.
  • Collaborate with third-party contractors regarding the CANS assessment.
  • Document all case activity and enter assessment information into the eCANS web-based application.
  • Communicate CANS results to the child's placement team and provide guidance to CPS and CPI staff.
  • Serve as a liaison to staff, government agencies, and community organizations regarding program specifics.
  • Conduct surveys and reviews to determine compliance with certification requirements and policies.
  • Prepare and conduct presentations related to the CANS assessment and placement process.
  • Monitor and evaluate compliance with program policies and procedures.
  • Provide guidance and technical assistance to agency staff and the community on CANS assessment and placement policy.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED required; graduation from an accredited four-year college or university preferred.
  • Two years of full-time consultative, social service, professional, or technical work experience.
  • Knowledge of state and federal laws and regulations related to the CPS Program.
  • Strong verbal and written communication and interviewing skills.
  • Ability to apply critical and analytical problem-solving skills and manage multiple assignments.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience in CPS Program and understanding of person-centered care.
  • Familiarity with WCAG 2.1 AA and Section 508 accessibility standards.
