About the position

Join WaFd Bank's dynamic and evolving Finance team as a Portfolio Manager. In this role, you will be responsible for developing, implementing, and monitoring strategies for our $3 billion securities portfolio, aligning with risk-return objectives and portfolio guidelines. You will also support various capital markets activities across the bank's borrowing and lending portfolios. As a key member of WaFd's Asset and Liability Committee (ALCO), you will collaborate with the Finance team to create capital and balance sheet allocation strategies from a comprehensive risk perspective. Success in this role requires demonstrated expertise in capital markets activities, collaborative work, and a strong understanding of bank capital allocation. The ideal candidate in addition to possessing strong analytical skills will also exhibit leadership capability to develop and engage junior team members. Along with the key functions listed below, this position will be expected to uphold the value that WaFd Bank places on simply being kind when servicing our co-workers and clients.

Responsibilities

  • Securities Portfolio Management
  • Provide monthly income attribution reports for the securities portfolio as part of the financial close process.
  • Present quarterly performance and compliance of securities portfolio to ALCO and enhance performance against industry standards and peer portfolios to identify areas for improvement and innovation
  • Conduct ongoing surveillance and review of the securities portfolio
  • Develop and execute portfolio strategies that align with the bank's overall risk appetite, interest rate outlook, and balance sheet objectives, while navigating evolving market conditions
  • Oversee pre-trade compliance, trade execution and settlement by collaborating with internal business partners
  • Support management of banking and brokerage relationships
  • Review short-term cash forecasts to ensure ample liquidity and manage daily short-term funding
  • Oversee collateral management related to pledged loan and securities portfolios, including supporting routine collateral inspections
  • Lead liquidity planning by informing liquidity stress tests, enhancing liquidity monitoring metrics and testing liquidity facilities
  • Manage wholesale deposit portfolio determining brokered deposit issuance strategies and managing sweep arrangement compliance and reporting
  • Execute interest rate hedges for including determination of hedging instrument and pre-trade documentation of hedge and counterparty review
  • Compile regular reporting of derivatives portfolio compliance, hedge accounting and fair value entries
  • Present to ALCO balance sheet management strategies developed in concert with the Treasurer and other members of the Finance team
  • Execute on capital markets workstreams of approved balance sheet management strategies
  • Support client facing back-to-back interest rate swap program
  • Maintain working knowledge of market trends, economic indicators, and regulatory developments to surface new and growing opportunities to improve capital allocation
  • Maintain the integrity of WaFd's business needs in all activities.
  • Adhere to bank policies and procedures designed to comply with federal regulations, including but not limited to the Bank Secrecy Act, USA Patriot Act and OFAC regulations.
  • Complete and pass all assigned eLearning courses and assigned certifications as required.
  • Avoid all real or perceived conflicts of interest and always maintain client privacy and confidentiality.
  • Undertake special projects as required to support the Finance team and broader organizational goals

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting or Finance, required
  • Significant progress toward or completion of a master's degree, CFA, FRM, or CPA (required)
  • Strong interpersonal and communication abilities.
  • Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint, and SharePoint.
  • Experience with 3 core tools: Access, Alteryx, Bloomberg, Power BI, R, Snowflake, SQL, Tableau, VBA
  • 10+ years of experience in financial analysis, with a focus on treasury, asset-liability management, capital markets, capital planning, secondary markets, or debt portfolio management
  • 5+ years of finance experience within a banking or corporate treasury environment
  • 2+ years of experience in a leadership role
