About the position

The City of New York is seeking a motivated Project Coordinator / Associate Urban Designer for its Public Realm Unit within the Office of Livable Streets (OLS). This role focuses on engaging New Yorkers to reimagine their city streets as public spaces, overseeing the development of programs, policies, and projects that enhance the public realm experience primarily for pedestrians. The successful candidate will be responsible for developing and implementing pedestrian-centered interim and capital projects, managing project priorities, and collaborating with community partners to design streets that meet both immediate and long-term community needs.

Responsibilities

  • Develop and implement pedestrian-centered interim and capital projects.
  • Design and lead project development from initial research and analysis through public engagement and recommendations.
  • Create and deliver public presentations regarding project proposals.
  • Manage project priorities and schedules, coordinating with local partners.
  • Oversee implementation of projects and initiatives.
  • Conduct thorough information gathering and analysis, including traffic and crash data, field conditions, and community characteristics.
  • Illustrate existing and proposed traffic conditions using CAD drawings.
  • Make recommendations based on traffic calming techniques and streetscape design considerations.
  • Collaborate with other DOT units, city agencies, and community entities.
  • Supervise interns and support staff as needed.
  • Participate in group work collaboratively and inclusively.
  • Effectively communicate with all stakeholders through verbal and written forms.
  • Represent the Public Realm and DOT in various stakeholder meetings.

Requirements

  • A baccalaureate degree in architecture from an accredited college or university.
  • Two years of full-time experience in planning, design, research, investigations, and/or studies related to urban design development programs.
  • Proficiency in AutoCAD, ArcGIS, Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, and Excel.
  • Strong graphic skills, including knowledge of the Adobe Suite.
  • Excellent writing, editing, and oral presentation skills.

Nice-to-haves

  • Knowledge of traffic calming and street design issues.
  • Experience in traffic engineering.
  • Ability to work independently or collaboratively as part of a team.
  • Strong problem-solving mindset.
