About the position

The Capital Projects Engineer at International Paper is responsible for managing and supporting the implementation of capital projects within the mill, focusing on safety, reliability, and improvement efforts. This role requires strong project management and technical skills to coordinate various disciplines and ensure successful project delivery, primarily in electrical engineering. The engineer will work closely with multiple stakeholders, including Business Unit Managers and Operations personnel, to achieve project goals.

Responsibilities

  • Understand the project delivery process and help define project scope, goals, and deliverables that support business goals, mill safety, reliability, and improvement efforts.
  • Develop capital investment proposals and manage all detailed design and construction of approved capital projects.
  • Apply technical know-how and analysis to understand complex designs and identify effective design solutions.
  • Coordinate the design of conceptual layouts and cost studies for capital investment proposals.
  • Coordinate all types of process design activities including equipment sizing and design of PFD's and P&ID's.
  • Review equipment and instrumentation/electrical specifications to ensure compliance with regulatory bodies and company standards.
  • Ensure project design and implementation adhere to mill safety policies.
  • Coordinate and review vendor equipment and installation drawings for operability and maintainability.
  • Effectively communicate project expectations to team members and stakeholders.
  • Liaise with mill operations, maintenance, upper management, and other project stakeholders.
  • Manage projects requiring coordination between outside consultants, contractors, and mill personnel.
  • Assist in checkout and start-up activities, and conduct post-completion audits of capital projects.
  • Initiate purchase requisitions for engineering, equipment, labor, and materials for assigned projects.
  • Delegate tasks and responsibilities to appropriate personnel and serve as a construction coordinator if necessary.
  • Plan, schedule, and track project timelines, costs, and milestones using appropriate tools.
  • Proactively manage changes in project scope and devise contingency plans.
  • Schedule tracking of construction and project spending forecasts on a monthly basis.
  • Supervise project team members and contractors, influencing them to take positive action and accountability for their work.
  • Participate in training sessions, presentations, and meetings as required.
  • Travel may be required for training, meetings, or off-site assignments.
  • Work on weekends approximately once every five weeks.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering or related field from an accredited college or university.
  • Minimum of 7 years of experience in technical or operational assignments, preferably 10+ years.
  • Experience managing projects from inception through start-up, including writing requests for funding and overseeing engineering, procurement, and construction.
  • Experience in the pulp and paper or manufacturing industry, with exposure to construction services.
  • Knowledge of industrial mechanical equipment and flexibility to lead projects outside core competence.
  • Knowledge of power distribution equipment and PLC's, DCS systems, and VFD's.
  • Familiarity with codes and standards and Non-Destructive testing requirements, especially electrical.
  • Proficient in MS Office and MS Projects; familiar with AutoCAD and SAP or similar systems.
  • Strong understanding of Project Delivery Process / Front End Loading.
  • Demonstrated experience in personnel management and collaborative work environments.
  • Ability to conform to shifting priorities and demands through analytical and problem-solving capabilities.
  • Strong written and oral communication skills, with the ability to convey priorities and concepts effectively.
