About the position

The Senior Vessel Captain is responsible for the safe operation, navigation, and management of the University of Delaware's research vessel, the HUGH R SHARP. This position requires a U.S. Coast Guard licensed Master Mariner who oversees the crew and scientific personnel, ensuring compliance with regulatory standards and successful mission execution. The Captain plays a critical role in operational decision-making, safety management, and collaboration with scientific teams while at sea and ashore.

Responsibilities

  • Command and manage the University of Delaware's research ship, including operation, navigation, safety, maintenance, and outfitting.
  • Lead responsibility for the ship, crew, and mission accomplishment, directing crew and technician work priorities.
  • Ensure the vessel meets all UNOLS, EPA, and U.S. Coast Guard standards and regulations.
  • Supervise daily activities of the crew and technicians, ensuring successful completion of scientific missions.
  • Assist in detailed cruise planning and mobilization, making independent operational decisions at sea.
  • Oversee scientific loading, unloading, and resupply of the vessel between cruises.
  • Stand a navigational watch as Officer in Charge, responsible for safe movement and mission operations.
  • Operate the vessel in various scientific operations, including station keeping and equipment deployment.
  • Schedule crew for proper manning and training, ensuring licensing and certification are current.
  • Ensure completion of maintenance and repair of the vessel and its machinery.
  • Secure the vessel in severe weather and arrange docking and transportation as needed.
  • Manage the ship's funds for outfitting, maintenance, and operation.
  • Ensure all safety equipment meets applicable standards and lead safety drills.
  • Maintain inventory of medical supplies and ensure qualified personnel are assigned on research cruises.
  • Assist with overall management of ship support equipment and storage facilities ashore.
  • Make recommendations for continuous improvement of work procedures and material condition of the ship.
  • Procure parts and services as needed and adhere to University policies.
  • Be available for communications while off the ship and respond to emergencies as needed.

Requirements

  • U.S. Coast Guard Merchant Mariner Credential with endorsement as 'Master 1600 Tons - Oceans.'
  • STCW certification as Master and as Officer in Charge of a Navigational Watch (OICNW).
  • Bachelor's degree and ten years' experience as a deck officer on vessels, or equivalent education and experience.
  • Extensive experience with deployment and recovery of equipment at sea, preferably on research vessels.
  • Must maintain required certifications and training for the vessel's size and class.
  • Experience operating vessels with Azipod or Z-drives and Dynamic Positioning.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience as a vessel Captain or Relief Captain preferred.
  • Demonstrates understanding of diverse needs and concerns of individuals with varying identities and backgrounds.
