About the position

The Cardiac Device Technician is responsible for managing implanted cardiac devices, including ICDs, pacemakers, and ILRs. This role involves evaluating patients in various settings, performing device parameter testing, and remote monitoring. The technician must interpret data to identify potential life-threatening cardiac irregularities and ensure patients and their families are educated on device management and follow-up care.

Responsibilities

  • Support device interrogations at multiple locations/clinics.
  • Monitor remote devices for heart failure management.
  • Perform cardiovascular implantable electronic device (CIED) analysis, interpretation, and update programming changes prescribed by physicians for all device company brands.
  • Interpret and manage remote home monitoring of CIEDs for remote monitoring companies.
  • Collaborate with cardiologists and electrophysiologists on CIED management and its relation to the patient's treatment plan.
  • Perform output threshold testing of the pacemaker lead(s) to determine optimal settings for the device.
  • Interpret device parameters, battery and lead status, arrhythmias, and heart rate histograms to determine underlying rhythm and sensing function.
  • Verify final parameters and changes as directed by cardiologist/EP to achieve optimal pacemaker performance.
  • Enroll patients into device clinic and educate them on CIED and remote monitoring.
  • Maintain necessary records and documentation on the patient's device.
  • Manage guidelines and protocols for device recalls.
  • Serve as a resource to physicians and other practice employees about device patients and services.
  • Assess the condition and appearance of the implant site and document any abnormalities.
  • Interrogate, interpret, and re-program cardiac devices with physician supervision.
  • Ensure charges are accurately captured for device interrogation.
  • Troubleshoot critical device issues and take immediate steps toward resolution.
  • Document device testing in EMR for review and educate patients on all aspects of their device.
  • Provide mentorship and training to junior staff in proper cardiac device interrogation policies and procedures.
  • Promote a healthy clinical environment and good working relationships.
  • Participate in positive, proactive inter and intra-departmental communications.
  • Keep equipment in good working condition and notify appropriate team members of problem areas or safety issues.
  • Ensure programming rooms are adequately stocked with necessary supplies.

Requirements

  • Completion of an accredited Cardiac Device Program (e.g., Arrhythmia Technical Institute - ATI) or one year of experience working directly with an Electrophysiologist, cardiac devices, and rhythm interpretation.
  • Knowledge of cardiac arrhythmias and devices.
  • BLS Certification (must be obtained within 6 months of hire).
  • Ability to read, write, speak, and comprehend the English language.

Nice-to-haves

  • CCDS International Board of Heart Rhythm Examiners (IBHRE) certification.
  • Proficiency in ECG interpretation.
  • Knowledge of billing and coding for Cardiac Device Interrogations and Remote monitoring.
