About the position

The Career Advisor plays a crucial role in assisting individuals in their job search and career development. This position focuses on providing professional advice and guidance to customers seeking employment, helping them evaluate their backgrounds, training, and education to set realistic career goals. The advisor collaborates with customers to explore career options, develop skills, and access necessary resources to achieve their employment objectives.

Responsibilities

  • Manage customers in their career exploration by developing relationships and actively listening to their employment-related wants and needs.
  • Identify customers' skills and abilities and evaluate their past work experience in relation to current goals.
  • Conduct thorough assessments to identify customers' strengths and address challenges.
  • Collaborate with customers to establish short and long-term employment and career goals.
  • Leverage external and system resources to achieve effective outcomes for customers.
  • Advocate for customers and provide additional resources and contacts when Workforce Solutions cannot meet their needs.
  • Maintain ongoing communication with customers to ensure their needs are met and provide coaching and support to recognize benchmarks and achieve goals.
  • Assist customers in accessing other services and resources, including financial aid from Workforce Solutions.
  • Provide professional employment-related counseling and advice about local labor market information, career exploration tools, resources, and job search strategies.
  • Facilitate career events, presentations, and workshops related to resume writing, interviewing skills, networking, and industry research.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree or at least six months of experience with transferable skills may be substituted for each 15 hours of college credit up to two years, or four years of experience working at Workforce Solutions with a recommendation from a supervisor.
  • Ability to listen to customers, analyze expressed needs, suggest solutions, and create an action plan.
  • Exceptional customer service skills with the ability to understand customer wants and suggest viable options.
  • Strong interpersonal communication skills and knowledge of strengths-based interviewing techniques.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Windows and Office Suites, with the ability to learn new software.
  • Ability to work well in teams and with customers, demonstrating flexibility and adaptability.
  • Experience in assessing customers' work experience, education/interests, and career goals.
  • Comfortable discussing potential challenges to securing employment and providing professional advice and referrals.
  • Ability to read, understand, and apply policies and procedures.
  • Effective prioritization of tasks, time management, and organizational skills.
  • Experience with career management strategies and job search processes.
  • Strong functional knowledge of business career paths.
  • Ability to design training materials, career development programs, and workshops.
  • Ability to solicit and maintain relationships with potential employers to develop employment opportunities for customers.
  • Strong advising skills to critique customers' resumes and provide interviewing tips and job search strategies.
