About the position

The Career Coach position at Ser Metro-Detroit is a full-time role within the Adult Services division, specifically under the Center for Working Families (CWF) and ReBuild Detroit (RBD) programs. The primary responsibility of the Career Coach is to provide career coaching activities and supportive services to eligible customers participating in the apprenticeship readiness programs. This role is crucial in helping job seekers navigate their career paths and connect with potential employment opportunities. As a Career Coach, you will be expected to adhere to the mission of SER, ensuring that service plans are effectively implemented to meet the needs of customers. This involves maintaining relationships with employers and partners to generate job opportunities for the job-seeker base. A successful Career Coach will have a current understanding of economic and employment trends, as well as emerging career opportunities that align with the skills and qualifications of the job-seeker base. In addition to one-on-one coaching, the Career Coach will conduct workshops focused on career readiness soft skills and provide guidance to candidates on interview preparation. Ongoing follow-up with job seekers and employers is essential to assess employment status and satisfaction with the services provided. The role also includes managing and updating a database of job development leads and case notes, as well as maintaining the program database for data collection and reporting purposes. The Career Coach will assist with workshops, special events, and programming initiatives, such as Money Smart Week and Show Me the Money Day, contributing to the overall team effort by performing other duties as assigned. This position does not have supervisory responsibilities, allowing the Career Coach to focus on direct service delivery to clients.

Responsibilities

  • Adhere to the mission of SER.
  • Implement service plans to meet customer needs effectively and according to policies and regulations.
  • Maintain relationships and connect with employers and partners to generate job opportunities for job seekers.
  • Understand economic and employment trends and emerging career opportunities.
  • Work closely with students to match jobs with their skills and qualifications.
  • Provide workshops on career readiness soft skills and advise candidates on interview preparation.
  • Make ongoing follow-up calls and/or site visits with job seekers and employers to determine employment status and satisfaction with services delivered.
  • Manage and update the database of job development leads and case notes.
  • Maintain program database, including data collection, input, and program reporting.
  • Assist with workshops, special events, and programming such as Money Smart Week and Show Me the Money Day.
  • Contribute to the team effort by performing other duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • Graduation from an accredited four-year college or university with experience in social work, counseling, career planning, placement, or a related field.
  • Bilingual language skills required (English and Spanish).
  • Experience in WIOA and employment and training program operations preferred.
  • Knowledge of community resources, case management principles, objectives, standards, and methods, and program policies and procedures.
  • Knowledge of or ability to learn and use Salesforce, LaunchPad, OSMIS, FileMaker, and other reporting systems.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Teams, and Access).
  • Ability to make frequent visits to training providers' sites.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with customers, vendors, administration, and other employees verbally and in writing.
  • Must possess a valid Michigan Driver's License and have access to reliable transportation for fieldwork responsibilities.
  • Able to work in a fast-paced and performance-based environment.
