About the position

The Career Coach position at Ser Metro-Detroit is a full-time role within the Adult Services division, specifically under the SEMCA (WayneLINC) department. The primary responsibility of the Career Coach is to assist program participants in obtaining stable employment and advancing towards economic self-sufficiency. This is achieved by providing comprehensive support services tailored to the individual needs of each participant. The Career Coach will conduct interviews with potential program participants referred to SERCO, reviewing their applications and documentation to identify any barriers they may face in securing employment. In this role, the Career Coach will provide a range of support services, including individual counseling, transportation planning, childcare planning, and referrals for drug abuse treatment and other specialized services. A key aspect of the job involves working collaboratively with participants to develop an Individual Service Strategy (ISS) plan of action and a Career Plan. These plans will outline the necessary steps for participants to increase their job readiness, address barriers to employment, and achieve both primary and secondary goals. The Career Coach will also be responsible for maintaining participant records, ensuring that all program activities, attendance records, and progress reports are documented as required by SERCO and the program funding source. Additionally, the role requires attending meetings with various agencies to address participant concerns and conducting home visits when necessary. Staying informed about current labor market trends and occupational opportunities is essential for providing relevant guidance to participants. Overall, the Career Coach plays a vital role in supporting individuals on their journey to employment and self-sufficiency, requiring a blend of interpersonal skills, knowledge of community resources, and the ability to handle diverse needs and pressures.

Responsibilities

  • Interview potential program participants who have been referred to SERCO for services; review applicants' applications and other documentation to assess possible barriers to address.
  • Provide comprehensive support services to assigned program participants, including individual counseling, transportation plan development, child care planning, and referrals for drug abuse treatment and other specialized services.
  • Work with program participants to develop an ISS plan of action and Career Plan, outlining necessary steps for the individual to increase job readiness, address barriers to employment, and achieve primary and secondary goals.
  • Provide counseling and intervention to address observed barriers that may reduce the participant's chances of successfully completing the program; make referrals as needed.
  • Provide referrals to education-related activities that will increase skills and/or lead to a certification needed to achieve basic skills and/or employment.
  • Develop and maintain a working relationship with program participants and staff to ensure that concerns/barriers to successful program completion are addressed and resolved appropriately.
  • Maintain participant records, ensuring documentation of all program activities, attendance records, progress reports, and other information as required by SERCO and the program funding source.
  • Attend meetings as required by SERCO, the training institution and/or other agencies to address participant concerns.
  • Conduct home visits as necessary.
  • Maintain knowledge of current labor market and occupational trends.
  • Contribute to the team effort by performing other duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Social Work, guidance, counseling, or a related field.
  • One to two years of experience in case management or a related field.
  • Bilingual language skills in English/Spanish required.
  • Working knowledge of local community services and agencies.
  • Computer skills necessary to maintain various records and reports.
  • Interpersonal skills necessary to build positive relationships with program participants and various support agencies.
  • Mental ability to handle pressures related to dealing with multiple individuals from diverse backgrounds and varying levels of need.
  • Must be willing to travel and work flexible hours, including evening and/or weekend hours as needed.
  • Must have a valid Michigan Driver's license and reliable transportation.
