About The Position

The Career Coach position at Boston College is a part-time role focused on providing career exploration and coaching services to undergraduate and graduate students. The coach will work closely with students who are beginning their career journey, helping them to identify their interests, skills, and values while exploring various career options. This role emphasizes relationship building, adaptability to student needs, and a commitment to social and racial justice within the context of career development.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree required; Master's degree in College Student Personnel Administration, Higher Education Administration, Human Resource Management, professional degree, or related degree preferred.
  • Minimum of one to three years coaching experience in a higher education or similar setting is strongly preferred.
  • Ability to design, deliver, and present to students and colleagues at workshops and special events.
  • Experience in developing and implementing complex career-related programming.
  • Strong program management and organizational skills.
  • Commitment to working with diverse populations (e.g. students of color, LGBTQ+, first generation).
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication (written and oral) skills.
  • Collaborative and team-oriented working style.
  • Demonstrated ability to thrive in a changing, dynamic environment.
  • Demonstrated ability to collaborate and build partnerships with students and with colleagues within the department and across the university.
  • Demonstrated comfort with learning and using technology, including new and unfamiliar platforms.
  • Willingness to use technology to deliver career programming and information.
  • Understanding of and/or strong desire to understand career services trends and a commitment to staying abreast of shifts in the field.
  • Willingness to conduct program assessment, look critically at results and use findings to improve Career Center services and resources.
  • Ability to adapt and change with organizational needs.
  • Demonstrated commitment and ability to provide strong customer service with the desire to enhance and support the office's image, goals, and objectives through each individual interaction.
  • Willingness and ability to work evenings and weekends, as needed.

Responsibilities

  • Provide individual and group career coaching to undergraduate and graduate students, including career and industry exploration, interest and skills assessments, job search strategies, interview preparation, networking skills, resume and cover letter critiques, and job negotiation skills.
  • Serve as an expert in helping students discover their interests, skills, and values and in exploring how those align with career options.
  • Present career development workshops and classroom presentations on a variety of topics and formats.
  • Support diversity and inclusion initiatives that seek to engage students from historically marginalized populations in career education.
  • Build and maintain relationships with key campus partners in Student Affairs, Mission and Ministry, Academic Affairs, and student organizations.
  • Create and update educational materials on a range of career topics, including web content and worksheets.
  • Review and recommend appropriate career resources for exploring students.
  • Maintain proficiency with online tools, resources, and career coaching methods to continuously improve services to students.
  • Maintain and update coaching records based on sessions with students and alumni.
  • Assess and evaluate programs and services for continuous improvement.
  • Contribute to and participate in other Career Center events, programs, and responsibilities, as needed.
  • Support the overall work of the Boston College Career Center by providing career coaching to all students during drop-in hours and peak times in the academic year and assisting with operational planning, data management, and other administrative responsibilities.
