About the position

The Career Coach I at Bethune-Cookman University plays a pivotal role in guiding students through their academic and career journeys. This position is situated within the Center for Career Success, a unit dedicated to enhancing student success and retention through effective career coaching and development strategies. The Career Coach will work closely with students across the four Colleges of the university, providing essential support in aligning their academic majors with career exploration and work-based learning opportunities. The overarching goal of this role is to facilitate social mobility by ensuring equitable access to career resources and experiences for all students, regardless of their background or social capital. In this capacity, the Career Coach will develop and implement various programs aimed at increasing students' awareness of career education. This includes exploring diverse career pathways and assisting students in creating strategic career plans that incorporate experiential learning opportunities. The Career Coach will utilize a range of assessments to evaluate students' skills, interests, personality types, values, and motivations, helping them to identify ideal career choices. By interpreting assessment results and providing direct coaching, the Career Coach will empower students to make informed decisions regarding their academic and professional goals. The role also involves maintaining ongoing communication with students to track their progress and ensure they are on the right path towards achieving their career objectives. The Career Coach will deliver targeted services, including workshops, seminars, and individualized coaching sessions, to address various career-related issues such as workplace conflict, performance challenges, and work-life balance. Additionally, the Career Coach will be responsible for data collection and documentation of service outcomes, contributing to the overall effectiveness of the Center for Career Success.

Responsibilities

  • Assess students' current skill set using various assessments including interests, personality type, values, and motivations.
  • Interpret individual assessment results with students utilizing computerized Career Guidance Systems such as Focus 2 and O 'Net.
  • Provide direct career coaching to individuals and groups to help them make effective decisions regarding academic and professional goals.
  • Deliver targeted services to students including career assessment, coaching and advising, presenting workshops and seminars, conducting outreach, and managing programs.
  • Establish a career plan with students/alumni, including setting goals and creating action plans to reach those goals.
  • Coach individuals on career decisions, such as choosing a major or finding a job.
  • Develop individualized plans for career advancement based on the student's interests, skills, and talents.
  • Provide coaching services to individuals experiencing difficulties in their personal lives that may affect their academic/work performance.
  • Meet with students to discuss career issues such as workplace conflict, performance issues, or work-life balance issues.
  • Maintain contact with students throughout the coaching relationship to ensure progress towards goals.
  • Provide a variety of academic materials and resources for student growth.
  • Communicate necessary information regularly to students and appropriate staff regarding students' progress and needs.
  • Collect and track data, maintaining accurate documentation of service objectives and outcomes as well as other services provided by the center.
  • Increase student participation in career coaching and advising through various formats, including drop-in interactions, individual appointments, and presentations/workshops.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree required.
  • Ability to communicate clearly, problem-solve, and think critically.
  • Excellent organizational and time management skills.
  • Ability to be flexible and meet deadlines.
  • Detail-oriented and analytical.
  • Proficient with Microsoft Word, Excel, and Google Docs and platforms.
  • Experience with digital conferencing and database management.

Nice-to-haves

  • Master's degree in student personnel, higher education, counselor education, psychology, or other appropriate area from an accredited institution and one year of related experience.
  • Experience with career services (can include graduate student experience or other relevant professional experience).
  • Experience developing career programs and demonstrated aptitude for organizing programs, including marketing, planning, and implementation.
  • Experience using technology in career coaching, including assessment tools, academic and career information, job search assistance, social media, presentation development, data management, and reporting.
  • Skills or aptitude for developing and maintaining relationships - strong team member skills.
  • Ability to work equally well independently and with teams.
