About the position

The Career Coach for Pre Law, Government & Public Service at Stony Brook University plays a pivotal role in empowering students to achieve their career aspirations in law and public service. This position is situated within the Division of Student Affairs, which is dedicated to fostering a culture of respect, inclusion, and personal development among a diverse student body. The Career Coach will engage with students through individual and group coaching sessions, both face-to-face and virtually, focusing on job and internship search strategies, personal branding, and application processes. The role requires a high level of energy, positivity, and adaptability, as well as strong communication and interpersonal skills to effectively support students from various backgrounds. In addition to direct coaching, the Career Coach will be responsible for organizing and managing programs that prepare students for the workforce and law school. This includes coordinating an alumni mentoring program for pre-law students and providing logistical support for employer-student events such as career fairs and networking meet-ups. The position also involves serving as a liaison to academic departments and career-focused student organizations, ensuring that students have access to the resources and support they need to succeed. The Career Coach will utilize sophisticated career center management software to collect data, track student placements, and produce reports on law school applications and acceptances. Participation in professional development opportunities and committee involvement is encouraged to promote personal growth and contribute to the overall mission of the Division of Student Affairs. Evening and weekend work may be required at times, reflecting the dynamic nature of the role and the commitment to student success.

Responsibilities

  • Coach and prepare students individually and in groups on job/internship search strategies.
  • Help students clarify career interests and compose strong personal branding and applications.
  • Guide students in academic planning for law school.
  • Conduct mock interviews and critique application materials.
  • Organize face-to-face and virtual programs to prepare students for the workforce and law school.
  • Coordinate alumni mentoring program for pre-law students.
  • Maintain Pre Law Brightspace and provide logistical support for employer-student events.
  • Serve as liaison to select academic departments, faculty, and staff, as well as career-focused student organizations.
  • Use career center management software to collect data and track placements.
  • Produce reports on law school applications and acceptances.
  • Review, approve, and promote opportunities posted in the recruitment system, Handshake.
  • Participate in professional development opportunities and contribute to the Division of Student Affairs.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree (foreign equivalent or higher).
  • Two (2) years of full-time administrative experience (student experience may be considered).

Nice-to-haves

  • Master's degree (foreign equivalent or higher) in Higher Education, Student Affairs, Business or a related field.
  • Experience in career or academic coaching within a college population.
  • Experience conducting presentations, workshops, and/or training in person and online with a college-educated population.
  • Experience with technology applications, such as online career research databases, career networking sites or web-based recruitment systems.
  • Experience with careers in law, government, or public service.

Benefits

  • Base salary of $57,000.
  • $3,400 UUP annual location pay, paid biweekly.
