About the position

The Career Coach for Pre Law, Government & Public Service at Stony Brook University plays a pivotal role in empowering students to achieve their career aspirations in law and public service. This position is situated within the Division of Student Affairs, which is dedicated to fostering a culture of respect, inclusion, and equity. The Career Coach will engage with a diverse student body, providing individualized and group coaching to help students navigate their career paths effectively. This includes assisting students with job and internship search strategies, clarifying career interests, and developing strong personal branding and application materials. The role also involves guiding students in their academic planning for law school and utilizing various career tools, including Handshake, to enhance their job search efforts. In addition to direct coaching, the Career Coach will be responsible for organizing and managing programs and events that prepare students for the workforce and law school. This includes coordinating an alumni mentoring program for pre-law students and providing logistical support for employer-student events such as career fairs and networking meet-ups. The position requires collaboration with academic departments, faculty, and student organizations to ensure comprehensive support for students pursuing careers in law and public service. The Career Coach will also engage in information management, utilizing sophisticated career center management software to collect data, track placements, and produce reports on law school applications and acceptances. Participation in professional development opportunities and committee involvement is expected, contributing to the overall mission of the Division of Student Affairs and Stony Brook University. The role may require evening and weekend work, reflecting the dynamic nature of student engagement and support.

Responsibilities

  • Coach and prepare students individually and in groups on job/internship search strategies.
  • Help students clarify career interests and compose strong personal branding and applications.
  • Guide students in academic planning for law school.
  • Conduct mock interviews and critique application materials.
  • Organize face-to-face and virtual programs to prepare students for the workforce and law school.
  • Coordinate an alumni mentoring program for pre-law students.
  • Maintain Pre Law Brightspace and provide logistical support for employer-student events.
  • Serve as a liaison to select academic departments, faculty, and career-focused student organizations.
  • Use career center management software to collect data and track placements.
  • Produce reports on law school applications and acceptances.
  • Review, approve, and promote opportunities posted in the recruitment system, Handshake.
  • Participate in professional development opportunities and contribute to campus-wide events.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree (foreign equivalent or higher).
  • Two (2) years of full-time administrative experience (student experience may be considered).

Nice-to-haves

  • Master's degree (foreign equivalent or higher) in Higher Education, Student Affairs, Business or a related field.
  • Experience in career or academic coaching within a college population.
  • Experience conducting presentations, workshops, and/or training in person and online with a college-educated population.
  • Experience with technology applications, such as online career research databases, career networking sites, or web-based recruitment systems.
  • Experience with careers in law, government, or public service.
