About the position

The Career Coach position at SER Metro-Detroit Jobs for Progress, Inc. is a full-time role focused on assisting Wayne County justice-involved residents in their transition back into the workforce. The primary responsibility of the Career Coach is to assess the eligibility of participants for a regional grant program and provide comprehensive job readiness training. This includes developing Individual Employment Plans (IEPs) in collaboration with jobseekers, identifying their interests, goals, and needs, and creating strategies for successful employment placement. The Career Coach will also work closely with participants to develop Discharge Plans that outline the next steps post-release from correctional facilities. In this role, the Career Coach will conduct interviews to assess the service needs of jobseekers and recommend strategies to enhance their marketability. This may involve referrals to vocational training, workshops, and other resources aimed at overcoming barriers to employment. The Career Coach will actively participate in job search and placement events, ensuring that jobseekers are connected with available job placement services and recruitment opportunities. Additionally, the role requires managing a caseload of up to fifty intensive jobseekers, ensuring accurate documentation of case records, and providing follow-up services to ensure job retention. The Career Coach will collaborate with referral partners and Employment Specialists to facilitate successful outcomes for jobseekers, maintaining case reporting in management information systems (MIS) and jobseeker files. The position demands ongoing professional development to stay current with best practices in workforce development and may involve visits to various locations, including jobseekers' residences and training providers. The Career Coach will also be responsible for performing other related duties as assigned by SERCO leadership, contributing to the overall mission of supporting individuals in their reentry into the workforce.

Responsibilities

  • Assess Wayne County justice-involved residents to determine eligibility for a regional grant program.
  • Provide job readiness training and barrier resolution referrals.
  • Develop Individual Employment Plans (IEPs) with jobseekers that identify interests, goals, and placement strategies.
  • Create Discharge Plans with jobseekers that outline next steps post-release.
  • Assess jobseeker's career and job readiness and recommend strategies to enhance marketability.
  • Identify problem areas and service gaps, preparing reports for the supervisor on barriers to services.
  • Refer jobseekers who are not job ready back to partners for additional services.
  • Connect jobseekers with available job placement services, including recruitment events.
  • Refer jobseekers to the Reentry Employment Specialist for job match and retention support.
  • Screen caseload to refer candidates to Temporary Work Experiences (TWE).
  • Participate in job search and placement events, promoting teamwork and jobseeker satisfaction.
  • Cross-train with the Reentry Career Services team to support program outcomes.
  • Perform visits to jobseekers' residences and training providers as necessary.
  • Maintain accurate documentation of case records in appropriate databases.
  • Provide follow-up services after job placement to ensure retention.
  • Work closely with referral partners and Employment Specialists to ensure successful outcomes for jobseekers.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in human services or a related field.
  • Experience in career planning, placement, and employment training preferred.
  • Knowledge of education, training, and community resources.
  • Familiarity with case management principles and program policies.
  • Experience meeting performance metrics for high-risk client bases.
  • Knowledge of Human Centered Design principles, including Motivational Interviewing.
  • Ability to communicate effectively and assess jobseeker needs.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Access).
  • Valid Michigan Driver's License and reliable transportation.
