About the position

The Career Coach at Stevens Institute of Technology plays a vital role in providing career coaching to undergraduate and graduate students, as well as recent alumni. This position involves assessing students' skills, interests, strengths, and areas for development to help them achieve their career goals. The Career Coach will assist students and alumni in creating and developing essential job search materials such as resumes, cover letters, and portfolios, while also enhancing their interviewing skills and other professional competencies necessary for navigating the job market effectively. In addition to one-on-one coaching, the Career Coach will present and facilitate various career development workshops covering topics like resume writing, interviewing techniques, job search strategies, business communication, employer expectations, and networking. The role requires collaboration with the Career Center team and various campus partners to define the scope, deliverables, resources, work plan, budget, and timing for new programs and projects. The Career Coach will also be responsible for maintaining confidentiality and managing sensitive information, including career center data and budgets. The position supports key Career Center initiatives such as the Co-op Program and the Student Engagement & Career Success initiative through career coaching, program development, and data gathering. The Career Coach will gain expertise in various career development tools and resources, ensuring they stay updated as these resources evolve. They will also review data on student participation rates and contribute to departmental reporting, attend employer recruiting events, and conduct outreach to students and alumni to support career outcomes data gathering efforts. Representing the Career Center at various events and maintaining a professional demeanor is essential, as is the flexibility to occasionally work evenings and weekends to support various initiatives.

Responsibilities

  • Provide career coaching to individual undergraduate and graduate students, recent alumni, and small groups.
  • Assess skills, interests, strengths, and areas for development to determine the best approach for achieving career goals.
  • Help students and alumni identify and achieve career goals and create individualized career plans.
  • Assist students in creating and developing resumes, cover letters, portfolios, interviewing skills, and other professional and job search skills.
  • Present and facilitate various career development workshops on topics such as resume writing, interviewing techniques, job search strategies, and networking.
  • Work closely with the Career Center team and various campus partners to determine the scope, deliverables, resources, work plan, budget, and timing for new programs and projects.
  • Participate in the successful execution of assigned programs and projects, ensuring high student attendance.
  • Maintain confidential and sensitive information, securing and protecting all career center data, passwords, and documents.
  • Support key Career Center initiatives such as the Co-op Program and the Student Engagement & Career Success initiative through career coaching and program development.
  • Gain expert knowledge in career development tools and resources such as Handshake, Big Interview, and Resume AI.
  • Review and understand data on student participation rates and contribute to departmental reporting.
  • Attend and support employer recruiting events and help strengthen relationships with employers and alumni.
  • Conduct outreach to students and recent alumni to support career outcomes data gathering efforts.
  • Represent the Career Center and university at various on-campus and off-campus events as requested or assigned.
  • Maintain a professional level of conduct and attire.
  • Occasionally work evenings and weekends to support Career Center, Admissions, New Student Orientation, and other events.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree required, Master's degree preferred in counseling, higher education, psychology or related area.
  • 1-3 years of work experience, preferably in career advising, human resources, recruiting, or other relevant experience.
  • Proven record of success demonstrated through goal achievement, continuous learning, and continuous improvement.
  • Ability to operate standard office equipment and keyboards, lift and carry parcels (up to 25 lbs.), walk short distances across campus, and drive a vehicle if needed.

Nice-to-haves

  • Knowledge of technology degree programs or career paths in engineering or technology desired, but not required.
  • Preferred knowledge of career management platforms such as Handshake.
