About the position

Virginia Union University (VUU) is seeking a dedicated Career Coach to assist students in planning and developing pathways to achieve their career and professional goals. This full-time position plays a crucial role in the Career Development and Services department, where the Career Coach will conduct career mapping sessions, coordinate career-related activities, and provide personalized guidance tailored to the needs of both students and the department. The Career Coach will work closely with students to help them navigate their career paths, overcome employment-related challenges, and leverage their strengths to secure employment or excel in their chosen fields. In this role, the Career Coach will assess student strengths and advise on suitable career paths based on their skills, qualifications, interests, and experiences. The position also involves assisting students in reviewing and improving their resumes to ensure they align with industry standards and effectively showcase their qualifications. Maintaining accurate records of students' progress is essential, as is serving as a liaison with employers to identify job opportunities and foster relationships that support employment prospects for students. Additionally, the Career Coach will train and supervise assigned student workers, implement research study protocols, and prepare internal and external reports. The role requires conducting both face-to-face and virtual meetings with students, creating materials and guides, and facilitating training sessions related to departmental needs. The Career Coach must also be able to lift up to 20 pounds and may be required to travel to attend meetings, career fairs, and other events related to the role.

Responsibilities

  • Develop and implement effective coaching strategies to help students overcome employment-related challenges and navigate their career paths.
  • Assess student strengths and advise on how to leverage those strengths to secure employment or excel in their chosen career field.
  • Provide students with information on suitable career paths based on their skills, qualifications, interests, and experience.
  • Assist students in reviewing and improving their resumes, ensuring they align with industry standards and effectively showcase their qualifications.
  • Maintain accurate records of students' progress, tracking their development and outcomes.
  • Serve as a liaison with employers to identify job opportunities for students and foster relationships that support employment prospects.
  • Train and supervise assigned student workers, implement research study protocols, and follow best practices as directed by the Director of Workforce Development and Training.
  • Prepare internal and external reports, assist with grant data collection, and conduct both face-to-face and virtual student meetings.
  • Create materials, guides, and facilitate training sessions related to departmental needs, ensuring resources are relevant and up-to-date.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited college/university with major coursework in business or a related field of study is required.
  • A Master's degree is preferred.
