About the position

The Career Coach at Prairie View A&M University is responsible for fostering collaborative relationships with students, employers, and faculty to enhance students' career readiness and employment opportunities. This role involves delivering comprehensive career development services, guiding students in their career planning, and assisting them in securing internships and job placements. The Career Coach will also coordinate career-related events and collaborate with various stakeholders to support students' professional growth.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct interviews with applicants to discuss career planning and employment opportunities.
  • Identify and interpret appropriate career assessment tools for students.
  • Provide career and employment advising to students and alumni.
  • Assist students in building a Career Development Portfolio.
  • Guide students in creating their Career Development Plan, including a Post-Graduate Succession Plan.
  • Deliver individualized support for securing internships and employment, including job coaching.
  • Refer students requiring advanced career assessments or those with special needs.
  • Conduct career planning and employability classes, workshops, and seminars.
  • Assist students with market research and employment forecasts for their chosen careers.
  • Work closely with the Internship Coordinator to connect students to experiential learning opportunities.
  • Contribute to coordinating career and employment events and programs.
  • Research and develop collaborations with employers and industries related to PVAMU's programs.
  • Collaborate with Financial Counselors and Academic Advisors to align career plans with academic goals.
  • Prepare announcements regarding career opportunities and recruitment.
  • Partner with faculty to host employer and career-related events in class.
  • Work with the Communication and Alumni Services Team to disseminate information about workshops and job openings.
  • Track and maintain files and reports on employment and departmental achievements.
  • Prepare reports for local, state, and federal offices regarding employment statistics.
  • Participate in annual professional development training as required.
  • Supervise student workers and interns as needed.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in social science, psychology, social work/sociology, education, human resources, communication, public relations, marketing, business or related field.
  • Three years of related experience in workforce development, career services, human resources, college relations, marketing, job placement services, or higher education.
  • Knowledge of word processing and spreadsheet applications.
  • Knowledge of career coaching and advisement.
  • Knowledge of career assessment software and career development theories.
  • Knowledge of job market trends.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Strong interpersonal, organizational, and presentation skills.

Nice-to-haves

  • Master's degree.
  • One year of case management experience in addition to required experience.
  • Licensing in Counseling, Career Development, or Career Coaching.
