About the position

The Career Coach position at South Piedmont Community College is a full-time, 12-month grant-funded role that is renewable for the duration of the grant. This position is designed to support high school students in Anson and Union County by providing career development services and guidance. The Career Coach will work closely with local high schools, maintaining a presence on-site to foster relationships with students, families, and school staff. The role involves regular travel to the college campus and local high schools, particularly during the summer months when the Career Coach will assist with advising, registration, and conducting career workshops and information sessions. In collaboration with SPCC and high school partners, the Career Coach will develop and implement strategies to engage students and their families, including organizing campus tours and information events. The position requires maintaining consistent communication with enrolled high school students and applicants to build relationships and provide support throughout their educational journey. The Career Coach will also liaise with high school counselors and teachers to promote SPCC's program offerings and ensure that relevant materials are available at the schools. The Career Coach will actively participate in various events such as classroom visitations, career expos, and college fairs to discuss program options with potential students. Additionally, the role includes administering career assessments and providing personalized career advising through individual appointments and classroom presentations. The Career Coach will assist students with the enrollment process, orientation, registration, and retention efforts, ensuring compliance with North Carolina Career and College Promise regulations. Maintaining a caseload of students, the Career Coach will communicate regularly with SPCC faculty to stay informed about programs of study, industry credentials, and career opportunities. Collaboration with academic deans will be essential to identify innovative educational opportunities, including summer enrichment programs. The Career Coach will also document and maintain records of advising sessions and ensure compliance with grant documentation and reporting requirements. Participation in local and state Career Coach training and professional development activities is expected to remain current in knowledge of college programs and career opportunities.

Responsibilities

  • Develop and execute a plan for reaching students and families, including campus tours and information events at SPCC and in area schools.
  • Maintain communication with currently enrolled high school students and applicants to establish relationships with potential students.
  • Contact and meet with high school counselors and teachers to explain the benefits of SPCC program offerings.
  • Work closely with the high school CTE department and Career Development Coordinator to create opportunities for career awareness and exploration.
  • Participate in classroom visitations, career expos, college fairs, and other special events to discuss program options with potential students.
  • Administer career assessments and provide career advising to students through individual appointments and classroom presentations.
  • Assist high school students with the enrollment process, career options, orientation, registration, and ongoing retention.
  • Advise and register high school students in compliance with North Carolina Career and College Promise regulations.
  • Serve as a liaison to connect students and high school counselors to SPCC campus support resources.
  • Maintain a caseload of students at local high schools.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree
  • One year of related work experience within the past five years in career development, work-based learning coordination, academic advising, or school counseling.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office.

Nice-to-haves

  • Bilingual in Spanish
  • Bachelor's degree in education, human services, counseling, or a related field.
  • Experience working within a high school setting.
  • Experience working with dually enrolled high school/college students.
  • Experience working in a community college.
  • A minimum of two years full-time direct work experience in academic advising and/or career counseling.
