About the position

The Career Coach at Western Piedmont Community College plays a vital role in guiding high school students in Burke County as they navigate their educational and career aspirations. This position is supervised by the College Liaison and involves working directly within five local high schools. The primary objective of the Career Coach is to help students recognize their high school education as a stepping stone towards further educational opportunities, including community college and workforce training programs. By empowering students to make informed decisions about their future, the Career Coach aims to prepare them for success in post-secondary education and career paths. In this role, the Career Coach will serve as a crucial liaison between Western Piedmont Community College and Burke County Public Schools, ensuring effective communication with students, parents, and local agencies. Responsibilities include assisting students in aligning their personal, academic, and career goals with appropriate campus services and academic programs. The Career Coach will also be responsible for collecting and maintaining student data for reporting purposes, developing a system to track interactions with Career and College Promise participants, and participating in community and school events to promote educational opportunities. Additionally, the Career Coach will coordinate the annual planning process between high schools and the college, maintain records of student interactions, and support Career and College Promise students with their college enrollment each semester. This position requires extensive travel between high schools and the main campus, and the Career Coach may also be tasked with other duties as assigned by the Dean of Student Services.

Responsibilities

  • Serve as a liaison between Western Piedmont Community College and Burke County Public Schools.
  • Assist high school students with aligning their personal, academic, and career goals with appropriate campus services and academic programs.
  • Collect pertinent student data for required reports and record keeping in collaboration with high schools and college Records offices.
  • Develop a system to regularly communicate and track frequent contact with Career and College Promise participants for NCCCS reporting.
  • Participate in community, high school, and outside agency events as appropriate.
  • Coordinate the annual planning process between high schools and the college.
  • Maintain records of students assisted and services provided.
  • Support Career and College Promise students with college enrollment each semester.
  • Travel extensively between high schools and the main campus.
  • Perform other duties as requested by the Dean of Student Services.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university with coursework in Counseling, Student Development, Higher Education, or a related discipline.
  • Minimum of 1 year of experience working with students in an educational setting within the past 5 years; two years preferred.
  • Industry-related career development work experience in business, industry, or labor; or as a coordinator of work-based learning (job-shadowing, internships, cooperative education, apprenticeships); or as a career/academic advisor; or in school.
  • Excellent computer skills including spreadsheets, word-processing, and windows-based applications.
