About the position

The Career Counselor is responsible for delivering counseling services to both residential and non-residential students, focusing on personal and social development, career employment, and behavioral issues. This role involves providing individual and group counseling, crisis intervention, and ongoing support to help students achieve their personal and career goals.

Responsibilities

  • Contact assigned students prior to their arrival to welcome them and provide information about the center.
  • Meet and greet assigned arrivals at the designated time.
  • Provide ongoing intensive interventions with students accumulating NIRs and unexcused absences.
  • Conduct and document an intake assessment during the first 24 hours of enrollment.
  • Provide ongoing structured individual counseling weekly during the first 60 days and monthly thereafter.
  • Schedule and conduct monthly group support sessions to address specific issues.
  • Ensure that each assigned student attends a group or enhancement program.
  • Collaborate with other staff to case manage student progress and concerns.
  • Identify students needing more intensive services and refer them accordingly.
  • Document individual counseling sessions in case notes using the RAP format.
  • Collaborate with each student to initiate and update a Personal Career Development Plan (PCDP).
  • Ensure availability of counseling services on weekends and in emergencies.
  • Assist students with community resource referrals and support services.
  • Participate actively in Career Management Team panels for student transitions.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree, including 15 semester hours of instruction in social services-related instruction.
  • One year of experience in counseling or a related field.
  • Proficiency with advanced Microsoft Office applications including Word, PowerPoint, Outlook, and Excel.
  • High level of communication, interpersonal, and organizational skills.
  • Knowledge of career planning, job search strategies, and interview preparation.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience with crisis intervention techniques.
  • Familiarity with Job Corps programs and services.
