About the position

The Career Coach at the University of Tennessee at Martin will play a pivotal role in guiding undergraduate and graduate students through their career planning and development processes. Under the direction of the Director of Career Planning & Development, the Career Coach will engage with students to strategize and implement effective career plans. This position involves both individual and group career coaching, where the coach will assess students' skills and aspirations, helping them navigate their academic and professional journeys. The Career Coach will also be responsible for delivering presentations and programs to various student groups and classes, fostering relationships within the career community to create opportunities for experiential learning, networking, job searching, and graduate school admissions. In this role, the Career Coach will utilize various assessment tools to evaluate students' interests, personality types, values, and motivations, ultimately guiding them towards ideal career choices. The coach will provide direct career coaching, helping students make informed decisions regarding their academic and professional goals. Additionally, the Career Coach will manage ongoing communication with students to track their progress and ensure they are meeting their established goals. This includes developing and administering academic materials and resources that support student growth and success. The Career Coach will also be tasked with managing data collection and tracking, maintaining accurate documentation of service objectives and outcomes, and developing strategies to increase student participation in career coaching services. This includes conducting outreach and presenting workshops and seminars. The role requires a commitment to professional development to ensure the coach remains knowledgeable about best practices in career services and student engagement. Other duties may be assigned as necessary to support the overall mission of the Career Planning & Development office.

Responsibilities

  • Assess students' current skill set with various assessments including interests, personality type, values, and motivations to determine ideal career choices.
  • Interpret individual assessment results with students utilizing computerized Career Guidance Systems such as Type Focus, O 'Net, and others.
  • Provide direct career coaching to individuals and groups to help them make effective decisions regarding academic and professional goals.
  • Deliver targeted services to students: career assessment, coaching and advising, presenting workshops and seminars, conducting outreach, individualized service needs, presentations, managing programs, and development of student resources.
  • Create and establish a career plan with students/alumni, including setting goals and creating action plans to reach those goals.
  • Manage contact with students throughout the duration of the coaching relationship to ensure that progress is being made towards goals.
  • Develop and administer a variety of academic materials and resources for student growth.
  • Communicate necessary information regularly to students and appropriate staff regarding students' progress and needs.
  • Manage data collection and tracking, maintaining accurate documentation of service objectives and outcomes as well as other services provided.
  • Develop and implement strategies to increase student participation in career coaching and advising through a variety of formats, including drop-in interactions, individual appointments, and presentations/workshops.
  • Collect and compile data including but not limited to appointments, programming, recruiting activity, assessments and first destinations outcomes.
  • Track students from designated majors and industry areas and collect data on internships and first destinations of graduating students.
  • Create and disseminate reports based on this information to the Director.
  • Create learning outcomes for programs and conduct assessment.
  • Participate in professional development activities to ensure professional growth.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree and two years experience working with students or experience working with other clients on job search related skills and topics.
  • Ability to communicate clearly, problem-solve, and think critically.
  • Excellent organizational & time management skills.
  • Ability to be flexible and meet deadlines.
  • Detail-oriented & analytical.
  • Proficient with Microsoft Word, Excel, and Google Docs and platforms.

Nice-to-haves

  • Master's degree
  • Previous Career Services experience in Higher education.

Benefits

  • Minimum hiring rate $42,671.25 (Market Range 07) - Salary is commensurate with education and experience.
