About the position

The Career Readiness Coach at Austin Peay State University plays a pivotal role in enhancing the career readiness of first-generation and under-resourced students. Reporting directly to the Executive Director for University Partnerships and Success Initiatives, this position is responsible for implementing comprehensive career readiness programming that aligns academic pathways with career goals. The coach will work closely with students from their application process through their second year of college, ensuring they are equipped with the necessary skills and knowledge to succeed in the job market. This includes developing programming that is informed by current labor market trends and data, thereby ensuring that students are prepared for the evolving demands of the workforce. In this role, the Career Readiness Coach will facilitate both individual and group coaching sessions, focusing on career opportunities and strategies for job placement. This involves assisting students in creating effective communication resources such as resumes, cover letters, and online profiles. The coach will also be responsible for planning, developing, facilitating, and assessing new career events and initiatives that address the specific career needs of students, while creating opportunities for engagement with employers and alumni. Collaboration is key, as the coach will partner with faculty, academic advisors, and other staff to provide robust programming that supports student career readiness. Additionally, the Career Readiness Coach will conduct data collection and assessment to track the effectiveness of career readiness initiatives. This includes compiling data on appointments, programming, and student employment, as well as creating learning outcomes for programs and conducting assessments for the Director. The coach will also serve as a liaison between the office and various campus stakeholders, working to enhance the career readiness skills of student employees and collaborating with admissions to provide career readiness tools to prospective students. Other related duties may be assigned as necessary to support the overall mission of the university.

Responsibilities

  • Facilitate individual/group career coaching sessions for students in designated majors on career opportunities and job strategies.
  • Plan, develop, facilitate, and assess new career events and initiatives to address career needs.
  • Partner with faculty, academic advisors, and other staff to provide programming.
  • Collaborate with career services to advance the goals of the grant.
  • Work with the Coordinator for the Purpose First Scholars Program to provide career readiness support for first-generation and Pell-eligible students.
  • Conduct and compile data including appointments, programming, recruiting, and assessments.
  • Create learning outcomes for programs and conduct assessments and reports for the Director.
  • Track on-campus student employment within the student cohort.
  • Provide development for on-campus employers to enhance career readiness skills of student employees.
  • Serve as a liaison for the office through collaboration with college and departmental staff and faculty.
  • Collaborate with admissions to provide career readiness tools to prospective students.

Requirements

  • Minimum of a Bachelor's degree.
  • Minimum of two (2) years of full-time professional work experience in higher education, career services, or human resources working with students or employees on career exploration and development.
  • Knowledge of NACE competencies.
  • Awareness of career development and student development theories.
  • Strong planning, collaboration, and time-management skills.
  • Ability to communicate effectively and appropriately.
  • Ability to work independently with minimum supervision.
  • Ability to address large groups of students, faculty, and professional staff.
  • Ability to interact effectively with diverse populations and the public.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality of records and information.
  • Ability to maintain files accurately, both in paper and software programs.
  • Ability to handle multiple tasks simultaneously and prioritize competing deadlines.
  • Ability to efficiently operate a personal computer and associated software (Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, etc.) as well as SunGard HE Banner.

Nice-to-haves

  • Master's degree in higher education administration, college student personnel, counseling, or a related field.
  • Certified as a NACE Career Coach.
