About the position

The Home Care Aide provides essential support to individuals in their homes and communities who require assistance due to age, illness, or disability. This role focuses on delivering personal care and companionship, ensuring clients' safety, and helping them maintain their independence and quality of life. Home Care Aides are responsible for a variety of tasks, including assistance with daily living activities, meal preparation, and transportation, all while adhering to agency policies and industry standards.

Responsibilities

  • Assist with the activities of daily living and personal care including bathing, shaving, ambulation, mouth care, dressing, exercise, hair care, feeding, toileting, nail care, positioning, medication reminding, skin care, transferring, and vital signs monitoring.
  • Ensure client's safety and security by supervising the home environment.
  • Teach/perform meal planning and preparation, routine housekeeping activities, and laundry.
  • Provide companionship including social interactions, conversations, and emotional reassurance.
  • Provide respite care for families in accordance with care plans.
  • Perform/assist with essential shopping/errands, handling the client's money under supervision.
  • Assist clients with following a special diet plan as directed by a Physician.
  • Escort clients to medical facilities, errands, shopping, and outings as specified in the care plan.
  • Assist in basic client transfers when assessed as capable of ambulating without assistance.
  • Assist clients with communication by writing or typing correspondence for them.
  • Provide transportation to medical appointments and errands.
  • Accompany clients to recreational and/or social events and assist with plans for visits and outings.
  • Participate on the Care Team by providing input and making suggestions.
  • Ensure service is delivered in accordance with all relevant policies, procedures, and practices.
  • Monitor supplies and resources and evaluate the program, making recommendations as needed.
  • Follow the written care plan and carry out duties assigned by the Supervisor.
  • Observe clients and their environments, reporting unsafe conditions and changes to the Supervisor.
  • Complete and maintain records of daily activities, observations, and direct hours of service.
  • Attend orientation, in-service training sessions, and staff meetings.
  • Develop and maintain constructive and cooperative working relationships with others.

Requirements

  • Knowledge of personal care and home management skills.
  • Knowledge of principles and processes for providing client and personal care services.
  • Knowledge of the English language.
  • Knowledge of emergency first aid and CPR techniques.
  • Knowledge of clerical procedures such as maintaining records and completing forms.
  • Ability to assist clients with their activities of daily living competently.
  • Ability to establish and maintain relationships and communicate effectively.
  • Ability to monitor and assess clients and the effectiveness of service.

Nice-to-haves

  • Related experience in caregiving or home health aide roles.
  • Similar social and cultural backgrounds with some clients.
