About the position

The Carman Journeyman position at Amtrak involves the inspection, testing, and maintenance of wheel sets, brakes, and pneumatic systems on rolling stock equipment. This role is crucial for ensuring the safety and functionality of the railroad's equipment, adhering to FRA and Amtrak standards. The position requires a combination of technical skills, mechanical knowledge, and the ability to troubleshoot and repair various components of the railroad's machinery.

Responsibilities

• Perform inspection, testing, and maintenance in accordance with 49CFR regulations and Amtrak standards.
• Troubleshoot equipment to determine corrective actions and causes of equipment failures.
• Repair doors, windows, interior equipment, access panels, hand brakes, brake shoes, and outside car body components.
• Use a variety of test equipment to diagnose malfunctions, troubleshoot, and repair components and circuits.
• Maintain proper care and use of materials, test equipment, machines, and hand tools associated with the job.
• May perform welding and burning.

Requirements

• High school diploma or GED.
• Experience in troubleshooting, repair, replacement, and rebuilding of mechanical equipment and systems.
• Must successfully complete training and attain/retain certifications applicable to the assigned job.
• Knowledge of mechanical, hydraulic, and pneumatic systems.
• Ability to read mechanical drawings.
• Knowledge and skill in the use of electronic tools, equipment, and measurements necessary to meet established standards.
• Some computer skills.

Nice-to-haves

• Completion of technical school or apprenticeship program.
