About the position

The Carpenter position at UCLA involves performing a variety of skilled carpentry duties under the supervision of the Sr. Superintendent of the Carpentry Shop. The role focuses on building, repairing, and installing various carpentry-related projects, ensuring quality workmanship and adherence to safety practices. The carpenter will work independently, read blueprints, and maintain tools and equipment to support the university's mission of creating a thriving environment for students, faculty, and staff.

Responsibilities

  • Build, repair, and install cabinets, wall partitions, floors, and ceiling systems.
  • Set door jambs and hang doors.
  • Install metal window frames and insulate walls.
  • Hang drywall and install various types of door hardware, including panic hardware.
  • Construct concrete forms and scaffolding for special projects.
  • Operate and maintain carpentry tools and equipment.
  • Read blueprints to carry out assignments accurately.
  • Follow through on assignments with minimal direction and maintain safe working practices.

Requirements

  • Working knowledge of materials, equipment, methods, and tools of the Carpenter's trade.
  • Knowledge of Class A construction, UBC, OSHA, fire codes, construction procedures, and ADA requirements.
  • Understanding of standard safety practices and equipment related to carpentry.
  • Skill in reading plan specifications and blueprints, and basic mathematics for layout calculations.
  • Writing skills to complete reports accurately and understandably.
  • Ability to prioritize assignments and maintain cooperative working relationships.
  • Excellent oral communication skills for clear information exchange.
  • Ability to install metal stud and drywall partitions, suspended ceilings, and other woodwork.
  • Ability to troubleshoot problems in structural woodwork.

Nice-to-haves

  • Working knowledge of OSHPD and JCAHO Regulations; U.L. Fire Stopping.
