About the position

The Carpenter position at Alamance-Burlington Schools is a full-time role within the Maintenance department, focusing on all levels of carpentry with a particular emphasis on finish work. This role is crucial as it combines both aesthetic and structural integrity in carpentry tasks. The Carpenter will often work from oral instructions or rough sketches, necessitating a strong understanding of standard carpentry practices. For more complex tasks, detailed directions will be provided, but the Carpenter is expected to independently resolve most issues that arise during the work process. Collaboration with the Carpenter Foreman is essential for addressing difficult problems that may occur. The Carpenter will be responsible for determining the types and quantities of materials needed for various projects, requesting these materials, and ensuring they are prepared for use. Safety is a significant aspect of this role, as the Carpenter will be required to work from scaffolding and ladders, adhering to safety precautions at all times. The position also involves performing semi-skilled repairs on roofs, ceilings, doors, and door hardware, as well as assisting in drywall repairs and the alteration of non-load bearing walls. The Carpenter will also be involved in the construction and repair of cabinets, ensuring that all materials are cut, shaped, and assembled accurately according to specifications. This position requires a high school diploma and considerable experience in carpentry, along with a valid driver's license. The Carpenter must possess thorough knowledge of carpentry methods, materials, and equipment, as well as the ability to follow both oral and written instructions. The role demands physical stamina for manual labor and the ability to maintain effective working relationships with colleagues.

Responsibilities

• Determines type of materials needed.
• Gauges quantities of materials needed.
• Requests materials projected to be needed.
• Marks cutting and assembly points on materials.
• Erects, moves, and works from scaffolding and ladders; attends to the need for safety precautions.
• Performs semi-skilled roof, ceiling, and door and door hardware repair functions.
• Assists in the repair of drywall and moving or altering of non-load bearing walls.
• Assists in making and repairing cabinets.
• Cuts and shapes material to prescribed directions.
• Assembles prepared materials.
• Verifies accuracy of product by measuring alignment and fit.
• Installs and repairs glass, as needed.
• Performs other related work as required.
• Perform additional duties as assigned by the Carpenter Foreman and Director of Maintenance.

Requirements

• Graduation from high school.
• Considerable and progressively advanced experience in carpentry or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
• Must possess a valid driver's license issued by the NC Department of Motor Vehicles.
• Thorough knowledge of the standard methods, materials and equipment employed in carpentry.
• General knowledge of the standard methods, materials, and equipment employed in carpentry work.
• Some knowledge of the occupational hazards of building trades work and the associated safety precautions.
• Some knowledge of all building trade skills.
• Ability to follow oral and written instructions.
• Ability to perform manual labor for extended periods of time as required by work assignments.
• Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships as necessitated by work assignments.
