About the position

The Carpenter Master position at the University of Louisiana at Lafayette involves performing advanced carpentry work, overseeing subordinate craftsmen, and ensuring high-quality construction and repair of wooden items and structures. This role requires a high degree of precision and the ability to lead a small team in various carpentry projects.

Responsibilities

  • Repairs all types of furniture and wooden items.
  • Builds high quality bookcases, tables, lockers, cabinets, museum cases and fixtures.
  • Sands, finishes, refinishes, varnishes and stains furniture and other finished articles of wood.
  • Measures and precisely cuts a variety of artificial mate rails such as plastic, particle-board, formica, etc.
  • Canes and upholsters furniture.
  • Makes knives to produce special moldings and operates a planer, shaper, jointer, work lathe, drill press, mortising, boring, tenoning machines, jig saws, rip saws and cut-off saws.
  • Installs and fits fine trim work around lights, electrical fixtures, doors, windows and other outlets.
  • Estimates time and material for carpentry projects.
  • Inspects and approves work of contractual employees.
  • Lays out, surveys and constructs all manner of detailed carpentry projects from shop drawings or blueprints.
  • Installs and repairs locks.
  • Finishes high grade carpentry projects.
  • Mortises doors and other construction related detailed work.
  • Lays out and installs floor tile including resilient tile.
  • Estimates supplies needed for completion of specified projects.
  • Provides guidance for subordinate Carpenters and trades personnel as needed.
  • Keeps records as required by supervisory personnel.
  • Oversees apprentice training.
  • Performs other duties as needed to ensure the smooth flow of work within the job unit.

Requirements

  • Three years of experience in the carpentry trade.
  • Training in the carpentry trade may substitute for a maximum of two years of the required experience on a month for month basis.
