Responsibilities

• Study blueprints, sketches, or building plans to determine material requirements and dimensions.
• Select specified types of lumber or other materials for construction.
• Prepare layouts using tools such as rules, framing squares, and calipers.
• Mark cutting and assembly lines on materials using pencils, chalk, and marking gauges.
• Shape materials to prescribed measurements using saws, chisels, and planes.
• Assemble cut and shaped materials, fastening them with nails, dowel pins, or glue.
• Verify the trueness of structures using plumb bobs and carpenter's levels.
• Erect frameworks for structures and lay subflooring.
• Build stairs and install partitions and cabinet work.
• Cover subfloor with building paper and lay hardwood, parquet, and wood-strip-block floors.
• Apply sound-deadening and decorative paneling to ceilings and walls.
• Fit and install prefabricated window frames, doors, and finish hardware.
• Construct forms and chutes for pouring concrete.
• Erect scaffolding and ladders for assembling structures above ground level.

Requirements

• High School Diploma, GED, or equivalent years of experience.
• Appropriate training and experience in carpentry.
