About the position

The University of Washington Medical Center-Montlake is seeking a skilled Carpenter to join their maintenance team. This position is crucial for the upkeep and enhancement of the facilities, ensuring that the environment remains safe and functional for both staff and patients. The Carpenter will be responsible for a variety of tasks that include the installation, repair, and maintenance of structures and fixtures within the medical center. This role requires a high level of craftsmanship and attention to detail, as the work directly impacts the quality of care provided to patients. In this position, the Carpenter will perform skilled carpentry work, which includes installing metal stud framing, hanging sheetrock, and installing doors and windows. The role also involves repairing and maintaining various structures such as floors, walls, ceilings, and furniture. The Carpenter will be expected to build and install cabinets and other fixtures, ensuring that all installations meet safety and quality standards. Additionally, the Carpenter will adjust, repair, or replace locks, weather stripping, and other hardware as needed. The successful candidate will operate various power tools and equipment, maintaining them in good working order. This position requires a commitment to safety and adherence to all relevant regulations and guidelines. The Carpenter will work closely with other maintenance staff and departments to ensure that all tasks are completed efficiently and effectively, contributing to the overall mission of UW Medicine to provide exceptional patient care.

Responsibilities

  • Install metal stud framing, hang sheet rock, install doors and windows, and install door hardware.
  • Install and repair ceiling grid and ceiling tiles.
  • Repair floors, walls, ceilings, screens, windows, sashes, doors, furniture, wood chairs, fixtures, stairs, cupboards, loose Formica, and roofs.
  • Build and install cabinets, furniture, and other fixtures such as blood pressure gauges, cup-towel-toilet paper dispensers, shelving, bulletin boards, whiteboards, sharps containers, glove box holders, and medicine cabinets.
  • Adjust, repair, or replace locks, weather stripping, screens, mirrors, brackets, window blinds, curtain tracks, handrails, hinges, closures, and panic hardware.
  • Repair or alter buildings, sheds, scaffolds, partitions, concrete forms, and other structures from plans, sketches, or instructions; may construct new infrastructure from blueprints and specifications.
  • Operate power equipment such as saws, jointers, lathes, sanders, planers, boring, and mortising machines; clean, sharpen, maintain, and repair such equipment.

Requirements

  • Completion of a recognized apprenticeship as a carpenter; or full journey status as a carpenter in a union; or four years' applicable work experience.
  • Vocational training may be substituted for work experience on a year-for-year basis.
  • Possession of a valid motor vehicle operator's license may be required.
