About the position

The Carpenter position involves constructing, erecting, installing, and repairing structures and fixtures made of wood and related materials, ensuring compliance with local building codes. The role requires a strong understanding of blueprints and building plans, as well as the ability to work with various materials and tools. The Carpenter will report to the Construction Leader and is expected to maintain a high standard of service excellence while performing a variety of carpentry tasks.

Responsibilities

  • Study blueprints, sketches, or building plans to determine material requirements and dimensions.
  • Select specified types of lumber or other materials for construction.
  • Prepare layouts and mark cutting and assembly lines on materials.
  • Shape materials to prescribed measurements and assemble them using nails, dowel pins, or glue.
  • Verify the trueness of structures using a plumb bob and carpenter's level.
  • Erect frameworks for structures, build stairs, and install partitions and cabinet work.
  • Lay subflooring and cover it with building paper to prevent moisture.
  • Install hardwood, parquet, wood strip, and block floors.
  • Apply sound-deadening and decorative paneling to ceilings and walls.
  • Fit and install prefabricated window frames, doors, and trim.
  • Construct forms and chutes for pouring concrete.
  • Erect scaffolding and ladders for assembly work at ground level.
  • Weld metal parts to steel structural members as needed.
  • Perform building walk-throughs for preventative maintenance tasks.
  • Clean shops, maintain tools and equipment, and perform inventory of tools and materials.
  • Repair furniture and chairs as required.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED.
  • Three years of journeyman-level experience in construction or maintenance carpentry work.
  • Valid driver's license with an acceptable driving record.

  • Work experience in higher education.
