About the position

The Cartographer 1 position at Oregon State University is a full-time, seasonal role focused on supporting the Landscape Dynamics program and the NPS Great Lakes Network. The successful candidate will interpret remotely-sensed imagery to label and validate disturbance polygons in landscapes around national parks in the Great Lakes region, while managing data within a GIS geodatabase context.

Responsibilities

  • Interpret and label remotely-sensed imagery using a web-based interface, Google Earth Engine, and ArcGIS Pro (75%)
  • Manage and screen data (15%)
  • Communicate findings and progress to supervisor and NPS team, engaging in open and respectful communication with team members (10%)

Requirements

  • Two years of drafting experience; OR two years of training in a college or technical school in drafting, mapping, or a closely related field
  • Knowledge of drafting, surveying, plane geometry, algebra, and cartographic principles

Nice-to-haves

  • Direct experience with ESRI Geodatabase design principles
  • Direct experience with spatial data standards and metadata requirements
  • Previous experience interpreting multispectral imagery from the Landsat archive and/or from high-resolution imagery
  • Experience with programming languages (e.g. Python, R) to improve data screening or summarization
  • Bachelor's degree in geoscience, atmospheric and oceanic science, forest science, computer science, cartography, biology, ecology or related discipline
