About the position

The Cartographer position at the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service involves serving as an expert in cartography, responsible for creating and producing complex maps and reports related to refuge boundaries and federal ownership. The role requires the use of advanced GIS software to convert existing maps and legal descriptions, while also coordinating mapping efforts and establishing collaborative relationships with various organizations.

Responsibilities

  • Serve as the expert and technical authority on cartography duties within the Realty Program.
  • Create and produce complex cadastral maps, charts, graphics, and statistical reports for refuge boundaries and federal ownership status.
  • Coordinate and implement the complete mapping and inventory of all Refuge lands.
  • Convert existing hand-drawn land survey maps and legal descriptions using ArcGIS mapping software.
  • Establish collaborative relationships with federal, state, and local organizations to share information and minimize duplication of efforts.

Requirements

  • Degree in Cartography or a related field with at least 30 semester hours in cartography and related sciences.
  • One year of specialized experience equivalent to GS-11 level in the Federal service, including developing GIS standards and procedures, collaborating with organizations, and producing complex maps and reports.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience with remote sensing and photogrammetry.
  • Knowledge of land surveying and geophysics.
