About the position

The Culinary Platform Attendant at Michigan State University is responsible for organizing, preparing, and supplying various food items for salad bars, cold and hot food stations, and to-order service in a Residential Dining Hall. This role involves assisting cooks, maintaining food safety standards, and working directly with customers in a diverse environment.

Responsibilities

  • Organize, prepare, and supply food items for salad bars and food stations.
  • Assist cooks by combining ingredients, portioning, and serving food.
  • Maintain proper food handling and storage techniques to minimize waste and spoilage.
  • Work directly with customers in a diverse workforce.
  • Ensure freshly cooked products are ready for continuous service.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • One year of full-time experience in food preparation and use of kitchen equipment.
  • Knowledge of kitchen safety practices.
  • Ability to read weights and measures and perform basic arithmetic operations.
  • Knowledge of various methods of food preparation including sautéing, grilling, and steaming.
  • Ability to properly use knives and standard kitchen equipment.
  • Occasional lifting of 26 to 75 pounds.

Nice-to-haves

  • One year of satisfactory experience in a food-related area or equivalent education and experience.
  • Ability to anticipate needed changes in service and customer demands.
  • Skilled in taking initiative and being highly flexible.
