About the position

The Tribal TANF Caseworker I/II/III position at Maniilaq Association is focused on providing case management services to clients enrolled in the Tribal TANF program. The primary goal is to assist clients in transitioning to financial independence by managing their cases, issuing benefits, and connecting them with local workforce and educational resources. The role emphasizes promoting self-sufficiency and family wellness through direct support and guidance.

Responsibilities

  • Prepares and maintains case files in TAS software and paper format, ensuring timely documentation.
  • Issues payments, reports, and notices in TAS by monthly deadlines.
  • Tracks and monitors client cases for compliance with federal work activity and state requirements.
  • Meets work participation rates for community service or work activity as per federal guidelines, recommending sanctions when necessary.
  • Coordinates monthly work participation activities for TANF recipients, including job fairs and community service functions.
  • Documents follow-ups and case notes for each TANF client in accordance with TANF guidelines.
  • Maintains positive relationships with clients, providing support and guidance with empathy and resourcefulness.
  • Provides ongoing case management services to promote self-sufficiency and reduce dependence on TANF assistance.
  • Develops and updates Family Self-Sufficiency Plans with clients, identifying strengths and barriers to set goals.
  • Initiates frequent contact with TANF recipients through phone, in-person, and home visits to verify household status.
  • Collaborates with team members to create a publicity plan for the TANF program.
  • Manages a regional caseload, understanding the role within the division.
  • Establishes priorities, sets goals, and manages time efficiently.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent for Caseworker I, with 6 months to 1 year of relevant work experience desired.
  • Familiarity with the Northwest Arctic Borough Region and its culture; ability to speak Inupiaq is desirable.
  • Knowledge of local and external resources for client education, training, and job opportunities.
  • Ability to read and understand the Maniilaq TANF Manual and apply its policies and regulations.
  • Proficiency in basic computer skills for word processing and data entry.
  • Familiarity with TAS, State of Alaska electronic mainframe, Child Support Mainframe, and SAM Unemployment software.
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills with service area and state agencies.
  • Ability to travel in small planes.
