About the position

The Cashier & Barista at Haverford College is responsible for preparing and serving beverages and retail items while maintaining high standards of customer service. This full-time position requires working in various settings, including the COOP Library cafe and the Dining Center, and involves early morning, evening, weekend, and holiday shifts. The role is essential during campus emergencies and inclement weather, emphasizing the importance of customer interaction and adherence to health and safety regulations.

Responsibilities

  • Prepare and sell coffee drinks by following prescribed recipes and preparation techniques.
  • Welcome customers by determining their coffee or beverage interests and needs.
  • Educate customers by presenting and explaining the coffee drink menu and answering questions.
  • Maintain inventories by replenishing coffee bean supply and stocking supplies, pastries, and grab-and-go items.
  • Assist with putting away and restocking delivered items.
  • Keep equipment operating by following operating instructions and performing preventive maintenance.
  • Maintain a safe and healthy work environment by following sanitation regulations.
  • Enhance coffee shop reputation by accepting ownership for accomplishing new requests.
  • Adhere to sanitation program standards and local, state, and federal guidelines.
  • Assist in training and supervising student worker staff.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • One year of experience as a barista or cashier in a high-volume environment.
  • Current Serv Safe certification or the ability to obtain certification.
  • Demonstrated ability to read and follow written instructions.
  • Ability to perform simple arithmetic.
  • Proficient in oral and written communication with customers, co-workers, and management.
  • Good manual dexterity and sight.
  • Must be mobile between workstations and numerous campus buildings.
  • Must be able to obtain golf cart certification.
  • Solid reading, hearing, and speaking skills.
  • Working knowledge of safety precautions associated with the food service industry.
  • Excellent interpersonal and customer service skills.
  • Must be available to work catered events and special functions.
