About the position
The Cashier position at the City of Markham involves managing financial transactions related to water services, including cash, credit, and check payments. The role requires direct supervision and focuses on customer service, record-keeping, and clerical duties to ensure efficient operation of the utility billing system.
Responsibilities
- Collect and post all customer payments through the city's utility billing system
- Issue correct change and receipts
- Help resolve customer complaints
- Maintain customer water account records
- Balance the register drawer at the beginning and end of each day
- Maintain a clean and tidy working area
- Distribute city stickers to residents annually
- Greet residents and callers, handle their inquiries and direct them to the appropriate persons according to their needs
- Perform general clerical duties such as faxing, copying and answering phone calls
- Organize and distribute city mail to appropriate departments
Requirements
- Dependable and reliable
- Ability to type 40 WPM
- Great communication and basic math skills
- Resourceful with a high level of energy
- Ability to understand and apply various processes and procedures
- Computer skills including Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, Excel, and water account billing systems
- Great organizational skills and the ability to prioritize efficiently
- Ability to stand for long periods when necessary
- Maintain a neat, clean, and appropriate physical appearance
- Ability to maintain accurate time sheets
- Possess physical and mental ability to work independently and cooperatively
