About the position

The University of Hawaii is seeking a part-time (Casual Hire) Ke A'o Mau Project and Huaka'i Coordinator to lead interdisciplinary initiatives focused on community engagement, particularly with Native Hawaiian communities. This position is part of the Thompson School of Social Work & Public Health and is designed to provide students with culturally-anchored knowledge, skills, and values that facilitate effective work with kanaka maoli (Native Hawaiians). The coordinator will oversee the Ke A'o Mau course, which aims to holistically examine social justice and health issues while exploring culturally relevant resolutions and practices. In this role, the coordinator will be responsible for the research and development of virtual huaka'i, which are educational journeys that integrate cultural practices and community engagement. The position also involves supervising a Graduate Assistant and ensuring that all initiatives align with the funding requirements set by the University of Hawaii Foundation. Additionally, the coordinator will prepare year-end reports that meet the specifications of funders, faculty, kumu loea, and students, while also performing other duties as assigned. This position is temporary, expected to last until May 31, 2025, with a work schedule of approximately 10 hours per week. The successful candidate will begin work around October 2024, contingent upon satisfactory performance and funding availability.

Responsibilities

  • Lead all Ke A'o Mau interdisciplinary initiatives, including community engagement initiatives.
  • Begin research and development of virtual huaka'i.
  • Supervise Ke A'o Mau Graduate Assistant.
  • Lead Ke A'o Mau initiatives as defined by University of Hawaii Foundation funding requirements.
  • Prepare year-end reports to funders' specifications associated with faculty, kumu loea, and students.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • Master's degree in Social Work.
  • 4 years progressively increasing experience co-instructing SW680 Ke A'o Mau course.
  • Experience in collaborating and coordinating with cultural expertise in various cultural practices.
  • Expertise in course and huaka'i integration.
  • Strong experience in community engagement with Native Hawaiian serving organizations.
  • Strong background in Native Hawaiian cultural practices.
  • Strong interest in interdisciplinary and community-based research and instruction.
  • Strong experience with Zoom.
  • Strong oral, writing, and interpersonal skills.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience developing work for publication related to Kumu and Loea.
  • Expertise in drafting project reports and grants submissions for local and federal organizations.
  • Competency in cross-cultural community work.
