About the position

The Casual Patient Care Technician position at UPMC Horizon Medical Surgical is designed for nursing students seeking hands-on experience while completing their nursing degree. Patient Care Technicians (PCTs) play a crucial role in patient care, working closely with nurses and other healthcare professionals to enhance patient recovery and experience during their hospital stay. The role involves performing a variety of basic and advanced patient care tasks, adhering to established policies and procedures, and contributing to the overall quality of care provided to patients.

Responsibilities

  • Provides patient care including assisting with patient procedures and activities of daily living.
  • Assists with physical, respiratory, and cardiopulmonary therapies.
  • Provides feedback to the RN regarding patient care and reports changes in patient status.
  • Performs UPMC nursing core nursing assistant responsibilities and at least four additional identified tasks.
  • Assures equipment malfunctions are reported to the appropriate department.
  • Establishes effective communication with other departments and maintains professional relationships.
  • Constructively receives feedback and identifies learning needs to improve skills and performance.
  • Provides instruction to patients and their families under the direction of the RN.
  • Demonstrates clear communication with all members of the healthcare team.
  • Strictly adheres to all policies and procedures related to patient care and safety.
  • Documents in the medical record according to established procedures.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • 1 year of health experience or enrollment in a nursing program with completion of at least 1 clinical rotation required.
  • Successful completion of UPMC patient care technician class.
  • Successful completion of basic information system training.
  • Ability to effectively communicate both orally and in writing.

Nice-to-haves

  • Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) preferred.
  • Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) or Paramedic or currently enrolled in an EMT or Paramedic program preferred.
  • Microcomputer experience preferred.
